Brent Jones Departs Troy Athletics for Georgia Tech Leadership Role

Brent Jones, the highly successful athletics director at Troy University for the past six years, has made a significant career move, accepting a pivotal role as associate vice president and executive deputy athletics director at Georgia Tech. This transition marks the end of an era for Troy, where Jones cultivated a period of unprecedented athletic achievement, and heralds a new chapter for Georgia Tech’s sports programs.

Jones’s tenure at Troy was distinguished by remarkable success, overseeing a Trojans’ athletic program that secured an impressive ten Sun Belt Conference championships, encompassing both regular season and tournament titles. His leadership was instrumental in the team’s two regular-season West Division championships and two Sun Belt Football Championship Game victories within the last three seasons, establishing a formidable legacy.

The impact of Jones’s guidance extended beyond football. This past year alone, the Trojans celebrated both regular-season and conference tournament championships in men’s basketball, culminating in a coveted berth in the 2025 NCAA Tournament. These consistent victories underscore his strategic vision and dedication to fostering a winning culture across various sports.

Expressing mixed emotions about his departure, Jones described Troy as “a really special place,” crediting the coaching staffs, student-athletes, and administration for their collective efforts. His decision was tough, reflecting the deep connections and professional pride he developed during his time at the university.

Georgia Tech’s vice president and director of athletics, Ryan Alpert, warmly welcomed Jones and his family, emphasizing that Jones possesses “everything that we were looking for to fill such an important role.” This sentiment highlights the high expectations and significant responsibilities awaiting Jones as he aims to continue the momentum at The Flats.

Prior to his promotion to senior vice chancellor and director of athletics at Troy in 2019, Jones served as deputy athletics director for external operations, joining the university in 2017. His extensive career in collegiate athletics also includes roles at Southern Miss, Georgia Southern, and Ole Miss, showcasing a broad range of experience in marketing, communications, and external affairs.

Troy University Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., expressed gratitude for Jones’s “outstanding leadership,” acknowledging his preparation for the next step in his promising career. The chancellor’s remarks underscore the mutual respect and the positive impact Jones had on the Troy community, recognizing him as a valued member.

A native of Stone Mountain, Ga., Jones’s academic background includes a bachelor’s degree in history from Oglethorpe University in Atlanta and a master’s degree in education from Ole Miss. His athletic roots trace back to college baseball, where he played at UNC Asheville, Augusta (Ga.) State, and Oglethorpe University, providing him with a comprehensive understanding of the collegiate sports landscape.
