My journey into animal advocacy began not through formal training, but from a profound personal passion that an insightful editor recognized five years ago, offering me a unique platform. This opportunity allowed me to expand my capabilities beyond simple writing, evolving into a dedicated advocate for animals and addressing the complex social issues intricately linked to their welfare, a path that has consistently brought immense joy and purpose to my life.
A lesser-known aspect of my commitment involves my part-time work on weekends at The Cat Resale Store, a vital enterprise whose entire proceeds are channeled directly to the Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society. This direct contribution underscores the collaborative spirit and community support that underpins our efforts, bolstered by the generosity of truly caring donors who believe in our mission.
As August 4th marks my one-year anniversary at the Resale Store, this role has provided far more than just a means to support my son as he embarks on his college journey; it has deepened my connection to the animal welfare community and reinforced the tangible impact collective action can have on vulnerable lives.
Recently, Mary Ellen Roach, the shelter’s director of development, lauded the profound dedication of our team, stating, “Your dedication, compassion, and relentless effort have made an incredible impact on the animals who count on us — and it shows.” Her words resonate deeply, reflecting the tireless work of every employee and volunteer striving to better the lives of countless animals.
Roach’s insights offer a compelling glimpse into the formidable achievements of the Santa Fe Animal Shelter from January through June. During this period, a remarkable 2,258 cats and dogs received vital spay or neuter surgeries, conducted across the shelter’s own facilities, the Thaw Animal Hospital, and various off-site clinics, significantly contributing to population control and the overall health of the pet community.
Furthermore, the intrepid Animal Resource Center team facilitated the heartwarming reunion of an incredible 245 pets with their grateful families. This crucial service highlights the profound bond between pets and their owners and showcases the diligent work involved in tracking and reconnecting lost companions, often with visible displays of effort like the numerous kennel cards outside ARC, serving as a powerful reminder of our core purpose.
Like Ms. Roach, I share an immense pride in the consistent and impactful work our team at the Santa Fe Animal Shelter continues to accomplish. It comes as no surprise that our unwavering commitment to animal welfare and community support has been recognized and celebrated by the local community, culminating in us being voted No. 1 for our dedicated efforts.
The story of Scrappy, a recent shelter arrival, vividly illustrates the transformative power of the shelter’s comprehensive care. Scrappy arrived with a broken tail and a profoundly shattered spirit, his injuries so severe they impeded normal function. Through expert veterinary care and compassionate rehabilitation, Scrappy has not only physically healed but has also regained his vibrant spirit, ready for a new chapter in his life thanks to our dedicated team and the support for pet adoption.
