Clemson has once again asserted its formidable presence in college football, being overwhelmingly voted as the preseason favorite to clinch the Atlantic Coast Conference title. This dominant projection comes after the league’s media members, gathered last week in Charlotte, North Carolina, cast their votes, underscoring the Tigers’ consistent excellence in the ACC football landscape.
The reigning champion Clemson Tigers secured an impressive 167 out of 183 possible first-place votes, establishing them as the clear frontrunner. This marks their potential tenth conference win under the esteemed leadership of head coach Dabo Swinney, a remarkable streak that includes eight titles in the last decade, extending back to the 2015 season.
Despite the strong preseason rankings for Clemson, other teams are certainly vying for contention. The Miami Hurricanes, positioned second, received seven first-place votes. Their season hinges significantly on the performance of Georgia transfer quarterback Carson Beck, who steps into the pivotal role previously held by top NFL draft pick Cam Ward, signaling a new era for the Hurricanes.
Following closely in third place are the SMU Mustangs, a team that made waves with their performance last year, especially with the league’s westward expansion. Under the guidance of Rhett Lashlee, the Mustangs have showcased consistent strength, entering this season on the back of consecutive 11-win seasons, cementing their status as a rising force in NCAA football.
The top tier of the ACC also features several other notable programs. Georgia Tech secured the fourth spot in the media poll, demonstrating their growing aspirations. They are followed by Louisville, Duke, and Florida State, with the latter looking to rebound dramatically after a surprising flop last season, having been the preseason favorite but winning only two games.
Mid-table predictions see Pittsburgh at ninth, ahead of N.C. State and Virginia Tech. Syracuse, a team garnering significant attention for its potential to surprise, was picked 12th in the overall rankings, suggesting a challenging road ahead but also an opportunity to exceed expectations for the Orange faithful.
Further down the list, Boston College and Virginia fill out the remaining spots before the newest additions to the conference. California was slated at 15th, ahead of the two other league schools inaugurating new head coaches: Wake Forest and Stanford, with former NFL head coach Frank Reich taking the helm at one of these new programs, bringing a fresh perspective.
As the ACC football season approaches, the anticipation builds for both established powerhouses and emerging contenders.
