Colorado’s Maybell Project: A New Era for US Uranium Mining

The United States’ domestic energy landscape is witnessing a significant resurgence with the emergence of new, substantial uranium resources. A prime example is Global Uranium and Enrichment’s Maybell project in Colorado, which now stands as a pivotal addition to the nation’s strategic mineral assets, marking it as the second-largest initial hard rock uranium discovery in the Southwestern United States within a historic mining district.

Specifically, the JORC-compliant resource estimate for Maybell delineates an impressive 3.2 million inferred tonnes grading 849 parts per million (ppm) uranium oxide (UO). This translates to approximately 6 million pounds of UO, underscoring the project’s substantial potential to contribute to the nation’s critical mineral supply chain and bolster energy independence initiatives.

This significant uranium resource comes at a propitious time for the American nuclear sector, which is currently experiencing robust tailwinds. Growing government support for nuclear energy development, increasing industrial demand for clean power sources, and a concerted push for enhanced domestic uranium production are collectively revitalizing the industry.

The foundation of Global Uranium’s comprehensive resource estimate lies in an extensive 25-hole, 3,200-meter drilling program successfully completed last year. This detailed geological investigation confirmed high-grade uranium mineralization within the productive sands of the Browns Park Formation, a geological structure historically known for its rich uranium deposits in the region.

In terms of scale, Maybell’s initial resource firmly establishes its prominence, ranking just behind Energy Fuels’ Bullfrog project in Utah, which holds 10.5 million pounds of UO. It surpasses other notable regional assets, including Energy Fuels’ La Sal complex, which contains 4.2 million pounds of UO, further solidifying Maybell’s importance in the Southwest.

While its volume is noteworthy, Maybell also holds a respectable position in terms of uranium grade within the region. It ranks third, following the Pinyon Plain deposit with an exceptional 8,100 ppm UO and Bullfrog with 3,700 ppm UO, but notably exceeds La Sal, which reports 400 ppm UO, highlighting the quality of its mineralization.

The Maybell project is not only significant for its size and grade but also for its unique distinction as the first initial uranium resource to be announced in Colorado this year. It stands as one of the few JORC-compliant uranium resources identified in the Southwest, further contributing to the regional expansion of crucial mineral exploration.

Beyond the promising Maybell development, Global Uranium maintains a diverse portfolio of other critical North American uranium assets. Its Tallahassee project, for instance, boasts a JORC resource of 44.8 million tonnes at 530 ppm UO, equivalent to 52.2 million pounds of UO, collectively enhancing the company’s overall strategic diversification and long-term supply potential.
