Former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas faces serious federal charges following his arrest in connection with an alleged high-stakes illegal poker operation at his luxurious Los Angeles mansion.
The basketball luminary, known for his prolific career, was apprehended Wednesday, March 6. He stands accused alongside five other defendants, including Yevgeni Gershman, identified as a suspected high-level associate of an Israeli transnational organized crime group, bringing a significant element of organized crime to the forefront of this case.
Documents recently unsealed indicate that from September 2021 to July 2022, Gershman, Arenas, and their co-defendants purportedly ran an illicit gambling enterprise that drew significant attention, operating the high-stakes poker games from Arenas’ private property.
The indictment further alleges that Arenas specifically leased his Encino residence for the explicit purpose of hosting these clandestine high-stakes poker games, transforming his private property into a hub for illegal activities. It was under Arenas’ direct instructions that Arthur Kats, 51, of California, meticulously prepared and staged the mansion to accommodate these elaborate and unauthorized gambling sessions.
The 43-year-old former NBA All-Star is now formally charged with multiple counts, including one count of conspiracy to operate an illegal gambling business, one count of actually operating an illegal gambling business, and an additional count of making false statements to federal investigators during the course of their inquiry into the illegal gambling ring.
In a separate but related development highlighted in the indictment, Gershman is also implicated in a conspiracy with a different individual, Cojocari, to arrange a sham marriage in early 2022. This alleged scheme aimed to fraudulently secure permanent legal status in the United States for Gershman, who reportedly provided financial support to Cojocari for her participation.
This significant legal action against a prominent sports figure like Gilbert Arenas underscores the ongoing efforts by federal authorities to dismantle sophisticated illegal gambling networks, even those allegedly operating from behind the facade of celebrity residences.
