Forestport is buzzing with activity as residents and organizations unite for a diverse array of community events, from annual traditions to ongoing recovery efforts following the challenges of winter, promising a vibrant season ahead for all ages.
The significant clean-up operation stemming from last winter’s destructive snow load continues diligently throughout Forestport. Notably, the site of the former church building on Woodhull Road, which succumbed to the immense weight of snow, has been entirely cleared, with Bronze Contracting LLC now extending their vital work to the Forestport Boat Company on River Road, systematically restoring the town’s infrastructure.
Among the highlights for younger residents, the eagerly anticipated Kids Fishing Derby is set to cast off on Saturday, August 23rd, from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the scenic Woodhull Road boat launch. This family-friendly event requires each child to be accompanied by an adult possessing a valid fishing license, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants.
For the town’s senior citizens (those over age 55), an exclusive outing to Tug Hill Winery is planned for Sunday, August 17th. Organized by Glenyce Verschneider, the bus will depart promptly at 10:45 a.m. and return by 2 p.m., offering a delightful opportunity for a relaxed excursion and social gathering. Interested seniors are encouraged to contact Ms. Verschneider at 315-392-4971 to secure their spot.
The Forestport Volunteer Fire Department is at the heart of preparations for the beloved Old Forestport Days, slated for Saturday, August 23rd, with festivities commencing on Friday, August 22nd, and concluding Sunday, August 24th. The weekend kicks off with the Annual Lucas Lawrence Memorial Slow Pitch Softball Tournament and Home Run Derby, alongside town-wide sidewalk and garage sales beginning on August 22nd, creating a lively atmosphere throughout the community.
As part of their ongoing fundraising endeavors, the fire department continues to collect bottles and cans, quarters, and is still accepting steel donations at their designated dumpster. This year’s Old Forestport Days also introduces two exciting new events for August 23rd: BlackRiver Boatworks will host a corn hole tournament at their River Road business starting at 1 p.m., with winners announced at 6 p.m. Teams of two, aged 16 and over, can participate for $40, with proceeds benefiting both the Forestport Fire Department and St. Joseph’s.
Adding to the weekend’s entertainment, Kevin Burns, also known as KB Music, will provide lively music and karaoke at the firehouse beer garden from 5-7 p.m., ensuring a festive evening for attendees. The fire company is also actively seeking additional vendors for the event and selling raffle tickets for a Cub Cadet zero-turn riding lawn mower, priced at $10 per ticket, as a significant fundraising initiative.
Beyond the summer events, Forestport’s vibrant community calendar extends into the fall. Movin’ Boots Dance Connection is scheduled to resume line dancing lessons on September 22nd at the Forestport Town Hall, with classes held on Monday evenings to accommodate Erin Coon’s work schedule. Drop-in classes are a welcoming $10 for two hours of instruction, fostering an inclusive environment for dance enthusiasts.
Furthermore, regular wellness activities remain a staple in Forestport, with yoga classes suitable for all levels continuing on Tuesdays at 6 p.m., promoting health and mindfulness. For those seeking more active pursuits, pickleball is available every day of the week, with schedules managed via their dedicated app, offering flexible options for sports enthusiasts within the community. The town also extends warm birthday wishes to Nadine Corrigan on August 9th, Jerry Winters on August 10th, Barb Schuler, John Norton, and Allen Short on August 13th, Brett Ellen Pfendler on August 15th, and Sheri Newman and Tonya Jago Brown on August 16th, celebrating its residents.
