Former NBA All-Star guard Gilbert Arenas, widely known as “Agent Zero” during his playing days, has been arrested and federally indicted on serious charges related to operating an illicit gambling enterprise. This development marks another controversial chapter in the life of the athlete, shifting the spotlight from his on-court prowess to legal battles.
The indictment, unsealed this Wednesday, alleges that Arenas and five co-defendants orchestrated an extensive illegal gambling business, primarily running high-stakes poker games from Arenas’ lavish mansion in Encino, California. The operation spanned nearly a year, from September 2021 to July 2022, and involved significant sums of money exchanged through these unsanctioned games.
Beyond Arenas, the federal indictment also names Yevgeni “Giora” Gershman, Allan “Elica” Austria, Evgenni “Eugne” Tourevski, Yarin “YC” Cohen, and Ievgen Krachun as participants in the alleged conspiracy. These individuals, hailing from various Southern California communities, are implicated in the intricate network that facilitated the illegal poker games and associated activities.
Arenas, 43, of Woodland Hills, California, is specifically charged with one count of conspiracy to operate an illegal gambling business, one count of operating an illegal gambling business, and one count of making false statements to federal investigators. These federal charges carry severe penalties, reflecting the gravity of the alleged offenses under U.S. law.
According to the indictment, the poker games conducted at Arenas’ residence, including “Pot Limit Omaha” and other variants, were not merely casual gatherings. A fee was meticulously charged from each pot, either as a percentage or a fixed amount per hand, serving as the business’s revenue stream. This systematic approach underscores the organized nature of the alleged sports crime operation.
The illegal gambling enterprise extended its services beyond just the games. Gershman, a co-defendant, reportedly hired women who were compensated through tips and offered drinks, massages, and companionship to the players. The indictment further reveals that these women were charged a percentage of their earnings by the business operators, highlighting another layer of the illicit financial structure.
To ensure the smooth and secure running of the high-stakes poker games, the operation employed a full staff, including chefs, valets, and armed security guards. This level of infrastructure suggests a sophisticated and well-resourced venture, designed to attract and accommodate high-rolling participants in a clandestine environment.
This is not the first time Gilbert Arenas has faced significant off-court controversy. His NBA career was notably interrupted by a 2009 incident where he and a teammate brought guns into the Washington Wizards’ locker room after a dispute, leading to a lengthy suspension. Arenas is scheduled to make his initial appearance and be arraigned in U.S. District Court in downtown Los Angeles.
