Iron Maiden’s First Singer Paul Mario Day Dies at 69

The heavy metal world mourns the passing of Paul Mario Day, who served as Iron Maiden’s inaugural live lead vocalist. His death, confirmed at 69 years old, marks a poignant moment for fans recalling the band’s earliest formative years before their monumental recording career began.

News of Day’s death was shared by Iron Maiden themselves on their official social media channels on July 30. The iconic band expressed profound sorrow, stating, “We are deeply saddened that Paul Mario Day, Iron Maiden’s first ever vocalist back in 1975, has passed away. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to Paul’s family and friends.”

William Luff, a representative for Iron Maiden, further corroborated the news, emphasizing Day’s pivotal, albeit brief, contribution to the band. Luff noted that Day “performed live for a short time with the very first line up of Iron Maiden 50 years ago but never recorded any music or released a record with them.”

Day’s tenure in Iron Maiden’s initial lineup in December 1975 saw him on lead vocals alongside Dave Sullivan and Terry Rance on guitar, Steve Harris on bass and backing vocals, and Ron Matthews on drums. Harris remains the sole original member to have continued with the band through its numerous lineup changes over the decades.

His departure in 1976 was prompted by the band’s desire to evolve their onstage presence, a strategic shift articulated by Steve Harris. Day was subsequently replaced by Dennis Wilcock, marking another transition in the band’s nascent history as they solidified their groundbreaking sound.

Following these early changes, Iron Maiden’s recording career truly took flight with lead vocalists such as Paul Di’Anno, who passed away in 2024 at 66, and ultimately, the legendary Bruce Dickinson. Dickinson himself had a brief hiatus, during which Blaze Bayley took on vocal duties before Dickinson’s celebrated return.

Paul Mario Day’s contribution, though unrecorded, established a foundational element of Iron Maiden’s live sound during their pivotal embryonic period. His memory remains an important part of the Iron Maiden legacy, reminding fans of the diverse talents that shaped one of heavy metal’s most enduring and influential bands.
