Shannon Sharpe Exits ESPN’s First Take Amidst Settled Lawsuit

Pro Football Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe will not return as a commentator on ESPN’s popular debate show, “First Take,” a significant development in the sports media landscape following recent legal proceedings that have drawn considerable attention.

This decision comes just weeks after a high-stakes $50 million civil lawsuit, accusing the former NFL star of rape, was officially settled. The legal action, which had cast a shadow over Sharpe’s public image and professional commitments, concluded earlier this month.

The lawsuit, filed on April 20 in Clark County, Nevada, detailed multiple alleged non-consensual sexual encounters. The accuser sought substantial damages for claims including assault, sexual assault, battery, sexual battery, and intentional infliction of emotional distress, stemming from incidents reportedly occurring between October and January in her Las Vegas apartment.

Throughout the legal process, the prominent sports media personality vehemently denied all allegations. His firm stance against the accusations has been consistent since the lawsuit became public, asserting his innocence against the grave charges.

Earlier this year, shortly after the lawsuit’s filing, Sharpe had announced a temporary hiatus from his “First Take” duties. At that time, he publicly stated his intention to return to the show in time for the 2025 NFL season, suggesting a short-term break rather than a permanent departure.

An ESPN spokesperson, in a statement released to The Times following Sharpe’s initial decision to step away, acknowledged the gravity of the situation. The network’s representative affirmed agreement with Sharpe’s choice to temporarily distance himself from the program, underscoring the seriousness with which the allegations were perceived.

The news of Sharpe’s non-return to the network was first reported by a third-party, signaling a definitive end to his tenure on the show. ESPN itself has declined to offer any further comment on the matter, maintaining a silence that leaves many questions unanswered regarding the specifics of his final departure from the sports broadcasting giant.
