Thurston County has proudly garnered national recognition, securing an impressive 19 Achievement Awards from the National Association of Counties (NACo) for its outstanding community programs and services. These prestigious accolades were formally celebrated during a recent Board of Commissioners meeting, highlighting the county’s steadfast commitment to enhancing the lives of its residents through innovative and dedicated public service initiatives.
This significant achievement places Thurston County at the forefront among Washington counties, having received more NACo awards than any other in the state. The commendations underscore the exceptional quality and impact of the county’s diverse range of programs, reflecting a deep-seated dedication to public welfare and strategic problem-solving.
Several departments contributed to this remarkable success, with the Public Health & Social Services team leading the way with seven distinct honors. The Auditor’s office, under the guidance of Mary Hall, received five awards, mirroring the five awards earned by the Public Works department. Additionally, both the Community Planning and Economic Development and Treasurer’s offices each secured a valuable award, showcasing broad excellence across the county’s governmental structure.
Among the most lauded initiatives was the “Fix-it Fair,” a groundbreaking community event that earned a “Best of Category” award in the volunteer sector. This free program mobilized 24 volunteer ‘fixers’ from the Public Works department to repair household items, effectively diverting waste from landfills and promoting sustainability. The event successfully served 65 individuals and repaired 77 items within just three hours, demonstrating its immediate and tangible positive impact.
The “Fix-it Fair” resonated deeply within the community, driven by a strong local emphasis on environmental stewardship and sustainable practices. Public Works director Karen Weiss noted the community’s recognition and appreciation for the county’s efforts to repair rather than discard, emphasizing how this message powerfully connects with residents. The overwhelming demand, as highlighted by recycling and waste reduction specialist Rob Pudner, also reinforces the significant need and enthusiasm for such valuable Community Services initiatives.
Another celebrated program was the “Thurston County Resource Hub,” an integral part of the Public Health & Social Services department. This vital drop-in center serves individuals with behavioral health needs who are also involved with the justice system, providing swift connections to crucial resources like free legal aid, healthcare, housing assistance, employment support, and peer guidance. This Public Health Programs initiative demonstrates a compassionate and effective approach to complex social challenges.
County leaders expressed immense pride in the staff’s dedication and innovation. Assistant County Manager Jennifer Walker affirmed that these Thurston County Awards reflect the unwavering commitment of staff to improve the lives of residents. Board of Commissioners Chair Tye Menser further underscored that county employees are not just public servants but integral community members, whose efforts are steering the county towards a positive trajectory and enhancing the quality of life for everyone.
The collective success in securing these NACo Achievement Awards is a testament to the exemplary Local Government Excellence practiced in Thurston County. It illustrates a collaborative spirit and proactive approach to addressing community needs, setting a high standard for public service and citizen engagement. This recognition validates the county’s continuous pursuit of excellence and its deep-rooted connection to the well-being of its diverse population.
