Virginia Councilman Attacked, Set Ablaze at Workplace; Suspect Charged

A shocking incident unfolded in Danville, Virginia, as a City councilman was subjected to a horrific attack, allegedly doused in flammable liquid and then set ablaze in what authorities are investigating as a deeply personal dispute, classifying it as a severe act of Workplace violence.

The victim, 38-year-old Lee Vogler, reportedly ran from his office at a local magazine, covered in gasoline, before being actively pursued and set on fire by the assailant just outside the building, marking a harrowing Virginia attack.

Eyewitnesses, or possibly security footage, would likely reveal the dramatic moments as the suspect, identified later, confronted Vogler inside his workplace before the escalating confrontation moved outdoors, culminating in the horrific incident.

Immediately following the brutal act, emergency services were alerted, and Vogler was swiftly airlifted to a specialized burn unit at a hospital in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, though his exact condition remains unknown at this time, highlighting the severe nature of the attempted murder.

Authorities quickly apprehended the alleged perpetrator, Shotsie Michael Buck Hayes, 29, also from Danville, who is now in police custody facing serious charges, including attempted murder, stemming from this egregious act of violence, now a major Danville crime investigation.

Investigators have been quick to clarify that the motive behind this shocking assault appears to be entirely rooted in a “personal matter” between the two individuals, explicitly stating it has no connection to Vogler’s public service or his role as a city councilman.

The incident occurred at the premises of Showcase Magazine, a regional publication covering southwest Virginia and North Carolina, where Vogler is employed. The office space is reportedly shared within a multi-business building, making the Lee Vogler incident a significant local story.
