Wenzel Whiskey Unveils Covington Distillery, Revitalizing Historic Landmark

The burgeoning spirit of Covington, Kentucky, recently celebrated a significant milestone with the grand opening of the new Wenzel Whiskey distillery, marking a remarkable transformation of a historic building into a vibrant hub for bourbon enthusiasts. This ambitious project not only expands the footprint of a popular local business but also underscores a commitment to urban revitalization within the city’s core.

The genesis of Wenzel Whiskey traces back to an unassuming conversation between friends Austin Dunbar and Tony Milburn, an anecdote rooted in a shared passion for bourbon. What began as a casual discussion over glasses of Knob Creek swiftly escalated into a determined resolve to venture into the highly competitive spirits industry, ultimately laying the groundwork for what would become a Covington distillery cornerstone.

In 2022, Dunbar and Milburn, alongside co-founders Todd McMurty and Nic Manning, officially established Wenzel Whiskey at 15 Tobacco Alley. Initially operating as a blending house, the company quickly gained recognition for its innovative public and private blending sessions, allowing patrons to craft their own unique whiskey profiles. This distinctive approach, coupled with successful small-batch releases, even earned Wenzel a coveted spot on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.

The decision to expand into a full-fledged distillery necessitated a new location, leading Milburn, a seasoned local real estate investor, to acquire the dilapidated Bilz Insurance building. Constructed in 1916, this approximately 10,000-square-foot structure, once a Packard car dealership, presented a formidable challenge, its dry, yellow-brick exterior and rundown interior signaling years of neglect.

Despite its aged appearance, the founders recognized the inherent potential of the historic property, envisioning it as a catalyst for community benefit. Their dedication to historic preservation transformed the building from a dusty, rusty shell into a modern marvel. The exterior, once dull, now boasts a fresh green hue, symbolizing the new life breathed into the venerable structure.

The meticulously redesigned interior, masterminded by Newport-based architecture firm Emboss, now seamlessly houses the distillery’s operational heart, a welcoming gift shop, an inviting bar, and versatile event spaces. This comprehensive facility not only caters to whiskey production but also serves as a multi-functional venue, enhancing Covington’s cultural landscape.

Covington Mayor Ron Washington lauded the Wenzel team for their exemplary work, emphasizing the project’s significance in the city’s ongoing urban revitalization efforts. He remarked, “Wenzel Distillery is a symbol of our momentum—new jobs, new investment and new energy in the heart of the city,” highlighting how the venture embodies the city’s commitment to building upon its rich history while forging a prosperous future. This opening reinforces Covington’s identity as a dynamic hub for local business and cultural development.
