Ameer Abdullah, a seasoned NFL veteran with a decade of experience, has officially signed with the San Francisco 49ers, marking his eleventh professional season just as training camps are in full swing across the league. This late-July agreement signals a strategic move for both the versatile running back and the NFC West powerhouse, as Abdullah aims to solidify a role in a competitive backfield.
Abdullah’s extensive career has seen him contribute to multiple franchises since entering the league, including stints with the Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings, and Carolina Panthers. Most recently, he spent three productive seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders, showcasing his durability and multi-faceted skill set in various offensive schemes.
Across 141 career games, Abdullah has amassed impressive cumulative statistics, recording 1,994 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on the ground. His contributions as a pass-catcher are equally notable, with 203 receptions for 1,468 yards and an additional 11 scores, bringing his total yards from scrimmage to 3,462 with 19 overall touchdowns.
While much of his early career production came during his initial years after being a second-round pick by the Lions, Abdullah experienced a resurgence last year with the Raiders. In 2024, he posted his most productive season in years, tallying 572 yards from scrimmage—311 rushing and 261 receiving—and five touchdowns, ranking among the team’s top five in both categories.
Despite his consistent performance on both offense and special teams in Las Vegas, Abdullah remained available in the NFL free agency market until late July, likely due to the Raiders’ organizational changes at general manager and head coach. His availability presented a valuable opportunity for a team in need of veteran depth and experience.
For the San Francisco 49ers, the acquisition of Abdullah serves to further bolster their running back position, providing essential depth and a reliable veteran presence. This move is particularly pertinent given concerns surrounding the health of star running back Christian McCaffrey, who was limited to just four games last season.
With talented younger backs like Elijah Mitchell and Jordan Mason having been key draft picks in recent offseasons, Abdullah’s signing offers an experienced complement to the existing talent. While consistently operating as a career reserve, Abdullah has carved out a productive and impactful role in the NFL, a trend he is now set to continue as he backs up the prominent figures in the 49ers’ backfield this fall.
