The Appleton Museum of Art, a campus of the College of Central Florida, is set to unveil a profound new exhibition titled “Deconstructing Self: Work by Seth P. Benzel.” This compelling showcase, featuring the distinctive creations of Ocala-based artist Seth Benzel, will be on display from August 30, 2025, through January 4, 2026, marking a significant event for local and regional art enthusiasts.
Located within the second-floor Preview Gallery, “Deconstructing Self” introduces a fresh body of work spanning both two- and three-dimensional paintings. Benzel’s exhibition is presented as an immersive journey into the intricate themes of transformation and identity, primarily explored through the dynamic lens of abstract painting, offering viewers a unique perspective on the artist’s personal and creative evolution.
Central to Benzel’s methodology is his self-identification as a “process painter.” This approach emphasizes the journey of creation over the final product, as he perpetually seeks innovative avenues to articulate his fundamental and authentic artistic voice. His dedication to this fluid and experimental method allows for a continuous evolution within his oeuvre, reflecting a deep engagement with his craft.
Regardless of the medium, whether it be traditional paper and canvas, diverse mixed media, or his more recent incorporation of salvaged wooden pallets, Benzel maintains that all his artistic expressions emanate from the same core creative source. This consistency in underlying intent, even amidst material variation, highlights the cohesive vision driving his abstract works and their narrative potential.
Benzel articulates that his unique technique enables him to convey “multiple levels of experience—whether it is spiritual, emotional or transcendent.” He champions a process that not only values perceived mistakes but also results in artworks that are profoundly resolved yet remain open to individual interpretation, inviting viewers into a deeper, more personal dialogue with each piece.
Aesthetically, this commitment translates into an experience that is inherently transformative and perpetually dynamic. Benzel posits that his works retain a capacity for ongoing change even within their fixed state, which is precisely where he believes art transcends mere representation, becoming provocative, challenging, and ultimately timeless—each painting a new beginning rather than a conclusion.
Visitors are invited to engage directly with the artist during a special Free First Saturday event. Seth P. Benzel will deliver a comprehensive talk about his solo exhibition, “Deconstructing Self,” at 11 a.m. in the auditorium, followed by an exclusive opportunity to view the exhibition alongside him and participate in an insightful Q&A session.
Furthermore, an informal meet-and-greet with Benzel is scheduled for 2 p.m. in the “Deconstructing Self” gallery, providing another excellent chance for art lovers to connect, ask questions, and gain deeper insights into his artistic motivations and techniques. These events are complimentary as part of Free First Saturday, and no prior reservations are required.
The Appleton Museum, along with its Artspace and store, operates Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Conveniently located at 4333 E.
