Bengals Training Camp: DJ Turner Shuts Down Ja’Marr Chase

The Cincinnati Bengals training camp continued its overarching theme of defensive prowess on Thursday, highlighted by another commanding performance from cornerback DJ Turner II, whose emergence has become a focal point of the early sessions.

Despite what had been an inconsistent start to camp for Turner, his recent efforts underscore a significant leap in his development, silencing early critics and impressing position coach Charles Burks, who had previously demanded more than just “flashes” of potential.

A standout moment occurred when the persistent on-field chatter reached a boiling point, visibly rattling star wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase, a testament to Turner’s tenacity and ability to disrupt even the most elite offensive talents.

Not merely a one-off, Turner’s defensive masterclass included a pivotal play against Tee Higgins, where he successfully raked the ball free from Higgins’ grasp as both players hit the ground, igniting a jubilant celebration from his defensive teammates.

Beyond Turner, the defensive unit showcased depth, with rookie linebacker Barrett Carter making a leaping pass breakup in a red-zone drill for the second consecutive day, further demonstrating the impact of the Bengals’ recent draft class.

Adding to the rookie highlights, defensive end Myles Murphy continued his impressive streak, appearing prominently for the fourth straight day by showcasing an eye-opening burst against the first-team offense, notably maneuvering past offensive tackle Orlando Brown Jr. to pressure Joe Burrow.

The offensive unit, however, faced its share of struggles, underscored by Evan McPherson’s 62-yard field goal attempt hooking wide right on the final play, tipping the daily scoring competition in favor of the defense once more.

In terms of player management, Coach Taylor provided an update on players like Amarius Mims, indicating a cautious approach to their return to full practice, prioritizing long-term health and readiness for the season over immediate pushes through minor issues.

This training camp continues to reveal compelling narratives, with the Bengals defense demonstrating a formidable cohesion and individual brilliance, setting an exciting tone for the upcoming NFL season as players like DJ Turner solidify their roles.
