Bristol, Connecticut, is home to a remarkable testament to enduring local commerce: Maple End Package Store, a veritable institution that proudly marks its 80th anniversary this year. What began as a modest enterprise has blossomed into a vital part of the city’s fabric, embodying decades of dedicated service and community engagement.
The store’s rich history dates back to 1945 when Max Friedman, Marvin Friedman’s father, laid its foundations. Initially a compact space of approximately 400 square feet, Maple End Package Store has undergone significant expansion over the decades, now boasting an impressive 3,000 square feet. This physical growth mirrors its deepening roots within the Bristol community.
Marvin Friedman, who inherited the reins more than five decades ago, continues to steer this established Bristol business. His profound expertise and unwavering commitment to customer satisfaction are hallmarks of the store, which currently employs four dedicated individuals at its 192 N. Main Street location. Marvin’s personal touch and vast knowledge of products contribute significantly to its local legacy.
For generations of customers, the iconic railroad crossing “X” on the road has been the quintessential landmark guiding them to a destination renowned for its expansive product selection and consistently friendly service. This easily identifiable marker signifies a place where quality products meet unparalleled local expertise, making it a true community hub.
Beyond its reputation for beverages, Maple End Package Store also houses an intriguing collection of beer steins. This diverse array showcases everything from majestic wolves and grizzly bears to nostalgic Budweiser mascots like Spuds MacKenzie, Bud Man, and the memorable frogs from 90s commercials, adding a unique charm to this long-standing family store.
The milestone anniversary celebration drew significant attention from city and Chamber leadership, who gathered to commend Marvin Friedman for the store’s impressive eight decades in Bristol. Katie D’Agostino, president and CEO of the Central CT Chambers of Commerce, lauded Maple End Package Store as an indispensable “cornerstone” of the city, highlighting its consistent support and guidance.
Mayor Jeff Caggiano echoed these sentiments, expressing admiration for the business’s longevity. He fondly recounted his own habit of “going to Marv” for various event needs, emphasizing the store’s ability to source “anything you want from around the world.” The Mayor underscored that Maple End Package Store stands out as a “unique, family run business,” a rarity in today’s commercial landscape.
In recognition of its profound impact and unwavering commitment, Mayor Caggiano presented Friedman with a congratulatory plaque. This special commendation highlighted the store’s consistent philanthropic efforts, particularly its significant support for numerous community events and local nonprofits throughout its extensive package store history. This dedication to giving back further solidifies its esteemed position in Bristol.
