Tensions remain high along the Cambodia-Thailand border as Phnom Penh urgently calls for the repatriation of twenty Cambodian soldiers detained by Thai forces following recent deadly cross-border clashes. The diplomatic standoff underscores the persistent complexities of the long-standing border dispute between the two Southeast Asian nations.
The capture of the Cambodian troops occurred amidst intense fighting that had rocked the disputed territory for several days. Reports indicate the soldiers were taken into custody after inadvertently crossing into Thai-held territory, approximately eight hours after significant military engagements had commenced. This incident has ignited a fresh round of diplomatic negotiations.
Maly Socheata, spokesperson for Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence, confirmed ongoing discussions aimed at securing the release of the detained personnel. Emphasizing the urgency of the situation, Socheata affirmed the Cambodian government’s commitment to ensuring the safe and swift return of its soldiers, highlighting the sensitive nature of the soldier repatriation efforts.
