Born in Grand Forks, ND, on March 16, 1934, to Bert and Nellie Nygard, Del’s journey brought him to Grafton at age nine, where he became a lifelong resident. After graduating from Grafton High School in 1952, he proudly served his nation in the US Army from 1954 to 1957. During his military tenure, he received notable accolades, including the Blazing Sun Award, a Batallion Citation, and was honored as Soldier of the Month three times, showcasing his early commitment to excellence.
Upon his honorable discharge, Delhart D. Nygard returned to Grafton, embarking on a distinguished career in local radio that would define much of his professional life. Starting at KGPC Radio in 1958, he diligently ascended through the ranks, eventually becoming sales manager, co-owner, and ultimately the sole proprietor of KXPO Radio. His vision and dedication shaped the local airwaves until he sold the station in 1998, establishing himself as a true radio pioneer in Grafton ND.
Beyond his professional achievements, Del’s personal life was marked by a deep and enduring love. He met Judy Wilson while roller skating, and their connection blossomed into a marriage in 1954 that celebrated an incredible 70 years. Their bond remained the light of her life, a testament to their unwavering commitment. As a loving husband, father, and adored grandfather to Dr. Katie Schouwieller, Emily Ternes, Dr. Adam Nygard, and Matthew Nygard, Delhart cherished his family deeply, including his 8 great-grandchildren.
Delhart D. Nygard was not merely a resident of Grafton but an active and vital community leader. His commitment to civic engagement was evident through his involvement in numerous organizations, including the Centennial Gold Coats, the American Legion, and various bowling leagues. Known for his friendly demeanor, he was a regular coffee drinker, an avid golfer, and a playful prankster, always ready with a witty remark. His deep faith also guided his life as a dedicated church member.
His generosity and willingness to assist others were hallmarks of his character; he was always prepared to help a neighbor or anyone in need. Del was widely respected as a man of great integrity, immense generosity, remarkable patience, and boundless love. The void left by his passing is profoundly felt by those who knew him, reflecting the immense impact he had on his community and loved ones.
A man of unwavering faith, Delhart found solace and strength in his spiritual beliefs, providing comfort to his family in the knowledge that they would one day reunite in heaven. Funeral services to honor Delhart D. Nygard will be held on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at 10:30 AM at the Bethel Free Lutheran Church in Grafton, ND, with visitation for one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at 2:00 PM at the Memorial Park South Cemetery in Grand Forks, ND. Military rites will be solemnly provided by the Grafton American Legion Post #41 and the North Dakota National Guard Honor Guard.
