Zakrzewski’s sentence stemmed from the brutal June 9, 1994, slayings of his 34-year-old wife Sylvia and their young children, Edward, 7, and Anna, 5, in their Florida Panhandle home. Trial testimony revealed the horrific circumstances: his wife was attacked with a crowbar and strangled, while both children were killed with a machete, driven by Zakrzewski’s stated intention to kill his family rather than face divorce.
Over the years, Zakrzewski’s legal team mounted numerous appeals, all of which were ultimately denied, including a final plea for a stay of execution rejected by the Supreme Court just days before his death.
