Guahan Academy Charter School is actively pursuing H-1B visas as part of a strategic initiative to bolster its teaching faculty by recruiting qualified educators from overseas, addressing critical staffing needs within the institution.
This proactive approach recently led school Chief Executive Officer Ann Santiago to engage with Baumann, Xu, and Black, a reputable local law firm renowned for its expertise in U.S. immigration and intricate business matters across Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
The primary objective of these discussions was to explore the legal frameworks and procedural requirements involved in sponsoring H-1B visas, specifically tailored for international teaching professionals.
Santiago confirmed the outreach, stating, “Two days ago, I spoke with the law office of Attorney Black. We reached out to him to get quotations of how he could help us process H-1 visas,” underscoring the formal steps being taken to initiate the recruitment process.
Furthermore, Santiago revealed that the school has already received applications from individuals currently residing on Guam, albeit under different visa statuses, presenting a unique opportunity for expedited processing.
She clarified the situation with the attorney, who advised that for these applicants, it would primarily involve a “change of status” rather than a new visa application, significantly streamlining the administrative burden since they are already physically present on the island.
This ‘change of status’ pathway offers a faster and more efficient route to securing employment authorization for qualified individuals who may currently be dependents on other visas and are unable to work, directly contributing to the school’s immediate staffing solutions.
The school’s commitment to exploring all avenues, including international recruitment via H-1B visas, highlights its dedication to providing high-quality education and ensuring a robust and well-staffed learning environment for its students.
This strategic move is expected to not only address immediate teacher shortages but also enrich the educational landscape by bringing diverse perspectives and specialized skills into the Guahan Academy Charter School community.
