From August 1st through September 29th, a curated selection of 15 acclaimed BritBox series will be prominently featured on HBO Max. This limited-time offering will be accessible via a dedicated in-app rail thoughtfully named “The Best of British TV by BritBox,” ensuring easy discovery for viewers eager to explore the diverse world of UK television. This initiative aims to seamlessly integrate these premium British dramas, comedies, and mysteries into the existing HBO Max content ecosystem.
Among the standout titles available through this unique collaboration are the highly celebrated original U.K. version of Ricky Gervais’ iconic mocku-series “The Office,” renowned for its groundbreaking humor and cultural impact. Additionally, fans of gritty crime thrillers will be delighted to find the first two seasons of “Luther,” starring the critically acclaimed Idris Elba, further enriching the dramatic offerings for subscribers during this promotional window.
While the financial specifics of the agreement remain undisclosed, industry observers describe the deal as mutually beneficial, strategically designed to boost both platforms. For BritBox, the primary objective is to pique the interest of HBO Max’s extensive subscriber base, encouraging them to transition to a full BritBox subscription, which is priced at $8.99 monthly or $89.99 annually, for continued access to its specialized British content.
This pioneering pop-up programming partnership marks a significant first for BritBox, a streaming service wholly owned by BBC Studios, the commercial arm of the British broadcaster. The collaboration involves key distribution partners including BBC Studios, Banijay, and Agatha Christie Ltd., highlighting the complex network of rights holders and content providers essential for such large-scale content deals in the global streaming services market.
For HBO Max, this promotional strategy is not entirely new territory, reflecting a calculated approach to content diversification. The platform previously engaged in a similar, successful two-month run in 2023, featuring a popular A24 film collection. Such strategic content infusions demonstrate HBO Max’s commitment to continually refreshing its library and providing varied, high-quality storytelling experiences to its audience.
Senior executives from both companies have voiced enthusiasm for the collaboration. Joshua Walker, CFO and chief strategy officer of streaming at Warner Bros. Similarly, BritBox President Robert Schildhouse highlighted the opportunity to offer HBO Max viewers a unique collection of distinctly British series that complement their existing entertainment choices, showcasing acclaimed series, fan-favorite franchises, and exceptional storytelling across various genres.
Tracing its origins, BritBox was established in 2017 as a joint venture between ITV and BBC Studios. Following ITV’s divestment in 2022 ahead of the ITVX launch, BBC Studios acquired full ownership of BritBox International last year. The international version of BritBox continues to serve a global audience, maintaining its presence in key markets including the U.S., Canada, Australia, and the Nordics, cementing its position as a leading purveyor of UK television content.
