Helena Hosts Expansive Montana Pride Celebrations and Parade for LGBTQ+ Community

Helena, Montana is set to host an unprecedented series of events for its annual Pride celebrations, marking a significant expansion of the state’s commitment to its LGBTQ+ community. This year’s festivities, organized by Montana Pride, an initiative of the Happiness & Joy Foundation, promise a diverse array of gatherings aimed at fostering inclusivity and joy across the region. The expanded program reflects a growing movement to make Pride accessible to more individuals throughout the Treasure State.

The week-long celebration kicks off with unique offerings, including a discounted climb night at Stonetree Climbing Gym on Wednesday evening. Attendees are invited to enjoy a buy-one-get-one-free pass between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m., with those arriving in vibrant pride colors receiving complimentary pride stickers. Later that same evening, The Grotto at Reeder’s Alley will present “Perfectly Queer Comedy,” showcasing talented performers exclusively from or residing in Montana, reinforcing local artistic platforms.

The momentum continues on Thursday with a spirited drag trivia contest held at Lewis & Clark Brewing, scheduled from 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Prospective participants are encouraged to reserve seats in advance, as all proceeds generated from seating will directly benefit Montana Pride, supporting their ongoing efforts for the LGBTQ+ community. These community events highlight the varied ways individuals can engage and contribute.

Friday offers a more civic-minded engagement opportunity with a Legislative Debrief at the Lewis & Clark Library, running from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. This session will facilitate discussions concerning the upcoming 2025 legislative session, providing an important forum for community dialogue. Food and beverages will be provided, encouraging an open and informative exchange relevant to current politics.

Also contributing to the Friday schedule is a lively dance event spearheaded by the After-school Teen Art Council, embracing a distinctive retro-futurism theme. This gathering promises not only food and beverages but also an enticing art raffle and opportunities for nail painting, creating a dynamic and creative space for younger attendees. This event underscores the diverse appeal of the Montana Pride programming and local arts.

As the week culminates, Saturday morning begins with the Lavender Scare Burlesque Brunch, hosted by the acclaimed entertainer Avery DeLite at Mt. Ascension Brewing. Commencing with doors opening at 10 a.m. and the show running from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., this event celebrates the day of the highly anticipated pride parade. Tickets, priced at $60, include both the show and brunch, with beverages available for separate purchase.

Following the brunch, the Lewis & Clark Library will again be a hub of activity, hosting a “Pride and Politics” event from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Here, the local Democratic Central Committee will engage in discussions regarding their upcoming state convention in September, illustrating the intersection of community celebrations and civic discourse on LGBTQ+ rights. Preparations for the grand parade also commence, with participants lining up at 2 p.m. on Placer at Last Chance Gulch.

The highlight of the week, the Helena Pride Parade, will officially step off from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., transforming the streets of Helena into a vibrant spectacle of solidarity and celebration. Following the parade, the festivities continue with an electrifying performance by The Fox Den, a Missoula-based DJ group, who will bring EDM music to the performance square from 7 p.m. until sundown, ensuring the joyous atmosphere extends into the evening.

The comprehensive nature of Helena’s Pride celebrations this year, expanding from a single annual event to multiple gatherings across Montana, underscores a deeper commitment to LGBTQ+ visibility and advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights Montana. While efforts to officially designate the pride flag as Helena’s city flag have faced challenges, the sheer breadth of community involvement and the unwavering spirit of Montana Pride demonstrate a powerful movement toward greater acceptance and recognition statewide. The numerous events offer diverse avenues for participation and celebration, fostering a robust and engaged community, especially during Pride Month.
