KidKraft Play Kitchens Recalled After Tragic Child Strangulation Death

A tragic incident has led to a nationwide alert for parents, as nearly 200,000 KidKraft Farm to Table Model Play Kitchens are being recalled due to a severe strangulation hazard. This urgent product recall follows the heartbreaking death of a young child in Oregon, underscoring the critical importance of child safety in household items.

The incident occurred in February 2023 when a 23-month-old child tragically died from strangulation and asphyxia. The child’s shirt became caught on one of the play kitchen’s hooks while he was climbing and crawling through the back opening, a design flaw that proved fatal.

Plano, Texas-based BackyardKids, the distributor, has initiated the KidKraft recall in conjunction with safety authorities. This measure is taken to prevent further injuries or fatalities stemming from the design defect present in these popular play kitchen units.

The primary concern revolves around hooks intended for toy kitchen accessories, such as pots and pans, located within the back opening of the kitchen. Children who climb on the counter or crawl through this opening risk their clothing getting ensnared, leading to a potential strangulation hazard.

Specifically designed for children aged 3 years or older, the recalled play kitchens are predominantly black and light gray, featuring wood-like countertops. Consumers can identify the affected model by the number 53411, typically found on a sticker affixed to the back of the unit.

These particular KidKraft play kitchen models were widely available for purchase online through KidKraft.com, Amazon.com, and Walmart.com. They were sold from 2018 up to July 2025, with prices ranging between $120 and $270.

Consumers are strongly advised to immediately cease use of the recalled play kitchens. For more comprehensive information and guidance on the recall process, affected individuals can contact BackyardKids toll-free at 800-882-0234 (Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. ET to 5 p.m. ET), via email at recall@kidkraft.com, or by visiting www.kidkraft.com/pages/recall. This consumer warning is paramount for protecting young lives.

Recalls like this one are a critical mechanism by which manufacturers and distributors remove products from the market that pose a significant risk of injury, gross deception, or are otherwise defective, as defined by regulatory bodies like the FDA. Ensuring toy safety is a continuous effort requiring vigilance from both producers and consumers.
