Louis Rees-Zammit Stuns NFL, Returns to Rugby After Jaguars Stint

Louis Rees-Zammit’s unexpected departure from the Jacksonville Jaguars and the NFL marks a significant turn in his unique athletic career, as the Welsh sensation confirms his return to professional rugby.

Before venturing into American football, Rees-Zammit had already established himself as a formidable presence in the rugby world, gaining international acclaim for his blistering speed and exceptional prowess on the field, particularly with the Welsh national team.

His foray into the NFL began earlier in 2024 when he signed with the Jaguars through the league’s International Pathway Program (IPP), a crucial initiative designed to provide elite international athletes with an opportunity to compete at the highest level of American football.

As an IPP designated player, Rees-Zammit’s presence allowed the Jacksonville Jaguars to maintain an expanded offseason roster of 91 players, offering the team additional flexibility in evaluating talent during crucial training camps. His departure now frees up this valuable designation for future use by the franchise.

Sources close to the athlete indicate that the contemplation of returning to rugby was not a sudden impulse but a significant consideration that had been maturing for some time, even during his brief tenure within the NFL system.

Rees-Zammit himself articulated his thoughts on his athletic longevity, noting, “I’m 24 now, probably got one to two more years to try and make it depending on how this year goes. I’ll be 25, 26 when I go back to rugby. I like to think I can still play at the highest level.” This statement underscores his profound ambition to compete at rugby’s elite tier for many years to come.

His decision raises pertinent questions about the long-term commitment of international athletes to the NFL’s pathway program, while simultaneously igniting widespread excitement within the global rugby community about the imminent return of one of its most dynamic and recognizable stars.

While specific details regarding his immediate rugby future, including his next club destination, remain to be formally announced, his re-entry into the sport is widely anticipated to be met with significant interest from top-tier clubs across the globe.
