West Ham United midfielder Lucas Paqueta has been cleared of the most serious allegations regarding breaches of the Football Association’s betting rules, a verdict that significantly impacts his career. An independent regulatory commission found that the core charges of spot-fixing could not be proven, bringing a potential lifetime ban from the sport to an end.
The Brazil international had vehemently denied all accusations since the misconduct charges were brought against him in May 2024, following a comprehensive 10-month investigation by the FA. These allegations had cast a long shadow over his promising football career and raised questions about integrity within the sport.
During a rigorous hearing, the regulatory commission concluded that the most severe claims, specifically those related to alleged spot-fixing, lacked sufficient evidence to be substantiated. This decision represents a major reprieve for Paqueta, who maintained his innocence throughout the arduous process.
However, the commission did establish that two lesser rule breaches, primarily concerning Paqueta’s cooperation with the FA’s investigative procedures, were proven. These breaches, under FA Rule F3, relate to his alleged failure to provide information and answer questions fully, and the appropriate sanction for these will be determined at the earliest opportunity.
Expressing profound gratitude, Paqueta shared his relief, stating his eagerness to return to playing football with renewed joy. His statement highlighted the immense personal toll the investigation had taken, emphasizing his desire to put the ordeal behind him and focus on his professional duties on the pitch.
The initial charges against Paqueta by the Football Association in 2024 detailed accusations that he had “directly sought to influence” specific matches by intentionally attempting to receive a yellow card from the referee. This action was allegedly for the improper purpose of affecting the betting market, allowing one or more individuals to profit from wagers.
Throughout the entirety of the investigation and legal proceedings, West Ham United provided unwavering support for their star midfielder. The club consistently backed Paqueta’s claims of innocence, standing by him amidst the significant external pressure and scrutiny.
West Ham United vice-chair Karren Brady publicly expressed the club’s satisfaction with the outcome, reinforcing Paqueta’s consistent professionalism despite the severe challenges he faced. She highlighted his continued high-level performance for the club, underscoring his resilience during this demanding period.
Paqueta’s impressive football journey includes emerging from Flamengo’s youth ranks, making 95 senior appearances before his European move to Lyon in 2020, and earning 55 caps for Brazil, including a Copa America title in 2019, showcasing his dedication and talent.
