Lynette Howell Taylor Elected President of Film Academy: A New Era Begins

A significant shift in the landscape of film industry leadership has occurred with the election of producer Lynette Howell Taylor as the new president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. This pivotal appointment, decided by the organization’s Board of Governors, marks a new chapter for the prestigious institution responsible for the Academy Awards.

Howell Taylor succeeds Janet Yang, who held the presidency since 2021, and her elevation to this role is particularly notable as she becomes only the fifth woman to lead the Academy. Her predecessors in this distinguished position include Fay Kanin (1979-1983), Cheryl Boone Isaacs (2013-2017), and the iconic Bette Davis (who briefly served in 1941), underscoring a historic moment in Hollywood news.

Her extensive experience within the Academy positions her uniquely for this leadership role. Lynette Howell Taylor commences her first term as AMPAS President during her second term as a governor representing the Producers Branch, having previously served for three years as vice president and chair of the influential Awards Committee.

The Board of Governors also confirmed the re-election of Lesley Barber and Howard A. Rodman as officers, further solidifying experienced leadership within the organization. Additionally, Jennifer Fox, Simon Kilmurry, and Lou Diamond Phillips embark on their first officer stints, bringing fresh perspectives to the Academy’s strategic direction.

Academy CEO Bill Kramer lauded Howell Taylor’s contributions, stating, “Lynette has been a vital part of the Academy Board of Governors for many years, most recently revitalizing our awards work as chair of the board’s Awards Committee.” Kramer expressed his eagerness to collaborate with her and the newly confirmed strategic board officers to advance the Academy’s global mission and financial stability.

Beyond her administrative roles, Howell Taylor boasts an impressive filmography as a producer, further cementing her profound understanding of the cinema world. Her credits include critically acclaimed works such as “A Star is Born,” alongside “The Accountant 2,” “The Accountant,” and “Blue Valentine,” with the upcoming feature “Roofman” also on her slate.

The governance structure of the Academy, as outlined in its bylaws, permits board members to serve up to two three-year terms, followed by a two-year hiatus, after which eligibility renews for additional terms, capped at a lifetime maximum of 12 years. Officers, conversely, serve one-year terms, with a maximum of four consecutive years in any single office.

This appointment of Lynette Howell Taylor signifies a continuation of progressive leadership at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, promising continued dedication to celebrating the achievements of the global filmmaking community and supporting its diverse membership.
