Maryland Invests $12 Million in Electric School Buses for Cleaner, Greener Future

The state of Maryland has unveiled a landmark initiative, committing over $12 million in grant funding to propel the adoption of electric school buses and their essential infrastructure across its counties. This strategic investment by the Maryland Energy Administration (MEA) marks a significant step towards revolutionizing student transportation, promising not only substantial cost savings for school districts but also cleaner air for communities and vital workforce development for a sustainable future.

Spearheaded by the FY 2025 Electric School Bus Grant Program, this substantial financial commitment is set to benefit seven distinct school districts and private transportation providers throughout the state. The program is meticulously designed to introduce zero-emission vehicles into previously underserved areas while simultaneously accelerating the ongoing transition away from traditional diesel-powered fleets, reinforcing Maryland’s dedication to environmental stewardship.

Among the program’s most noteworthy achievements is the successful introduction of electric school buses into Kent County, marking a historic moment as the county embraces its inaugural fleet of zero-emission student transport. Furthermore, this crucial grant funding will bolster and expand existing electric bus initiatives already underway in densely populated regions such as Prince George’s, Frederick, Baltimore, and Howard counties, ensuring a broader impact across the state.

Paul Pinsky, Director of the MEA, underscored the comprehensive nature of these grants, stating, “This year’s grants include the purchase of vehicles, infrastructure installation, feasibility studies and technician training — each of which are important parts of the move toward cleaner transportation.” He further emphasized the dual benefits, highlighting that “this program will make improvements in school districts’ operating budgets and in the health of our schoolkids,” illustrating a holistic approach to sustainable development.

In its entirety, the program is poised to fund the acquisition of 53 new electric school buses and install 40 vital charging stations, critical components for long-term fleet sustainability. Beyond immediate procurement, the grants also actively support the development of three comprehensive electric vehicle management plans, focusing on long-term transition strategies and specialized workforce training, ensuring the longevity and efficiency of the new fleets.

A core tenet of the MEA’s strategy is a strong emphasis on equity and long-term financial viability. Projects are strategically directed towards districts with a high concentration of low-income students, including those where over 60 percent of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. This targeted approach ensures that the benefits of clean energy and reduced operating costs reach the communities that stand to gain the most, fostering equitable access to sustainable transportation solutions.

Recognizing that a full-scale shift to electrification extends beyond mere vehicle purchases, the MEA’s grants also allocate resources for crucial planning studies, essential infrastructure site readiness assessments, and specialized technician training programs. These vital components are considered indispensable for the seamless and enduring deployment and maintenance of the new electric school bus fleets, safeguarding the sustainability of the investment.

The environmental impact of these projects is substantial, with the MEA estimating a total greenhouse gas reduction exceeding 9,300 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents. This impressive reduction is comparable to removing over 2,000 gas-powered passenger vehicles from the roads annually, promising tangible improvements in air quality, particularly around schools and residential communities, and contributing significantly to Maryland’s broader clean energy goals.

For education and environmental officials nationwide, Maryland’s progressive investment serves as a compelling blueprint. It exemplifies effective state leadership in harmonizing clean energy policy with critical equity considerations and robust cost-saving strategies.
