Federal authorities have recently brought charges against an Ohio resident following serious threats made against a prominent member of Congress, escalating concerns surrounding the safety of lawmakers. The individual, identified as Jeffrey Dorsey, a 60-year-old from Dayton, allegedly left a nearly 90-second, expletive-laden voicemail on a lawmaker’s Washington, D.C., office line. The chilling message specifically referenced Medicaid cuts, highlighting the intense public reaction to recent legislative decisions impacting healthcare.
According to court documents and confirmed by a House Republican aide, the target of the threat was Jim Jordan, a Republican representative from Ohio. The voicemail, transcribed by the FBI, contained explicit threats of violence if the representative voted to reduce Medicaid services, revealing a desperate and volatile response to policy changes.
This disturbing call came in the wake of a significant legislative action: President Donald Trump’s signing into law a bill that included substantial reductions to Medicaid. The measure had previously passed the Senate on July 1 and the House on July 3, with Jim Jordan among the 218 House Republicans who voted in favor of its approval, while only two Republicans joined 212 Democrats in opposition.
The investigation by the FBI swiftly followed, initiated after a staffer for Representative Jordan provided an audio copy of the threatening call to U.S. Capitol Police. Authorities meticulously traced the phone number to Jeffrey Dorsey through subscriber information obtained from the service provider, demonstrating the thoroughness of the law enforcement response.
Further corroborating their findings, the FBI reportedly called the phone number associated with the threat, and the voice of the person who answered was noted to strongly resemble the voice in the original voicemail. This critical piece of evidence strengthened the case against the Ohio man arrested in connection with the threats.
Dorsey is currently in custody, awaiting a detention hearing, and faces charges of interstate communications with a threat to injure.
