OpenAI Builds Europe’s AI Data Center with 100K Nvidia Chips

OpenAI is set to significantly expand its global footprint and accelerate the future of artificial intelligence with the ambitious launch of a massive AI data center in Norway, a project poised to house an unprecedented concentration of Nvidia GPUs and operate entirely on renewable energy.

This pioneering endeavor, branded as ‘Stargate,’ marks OpenAI’s strategic entry into the European market for such large-scale infrastructure. The initiative underscores the company’s commitment to building the foundational architecture necessary for advanced AI development and deployment, highlighting a crucial step in scaling AI capabilities.

The substantial undertaking is a collaborative effort, forged through a 50-50 joint venture between British firm Nscale, responsible for the design and construction, and Norwegian energy infrastructure company Aker. This partnership leverages Nscale’s expertise in large-scale infrastructure development and Aker’s robust presence in the Norwegian energy sector, creating a powerful alliance.

The Stargate facility is projected to be operational by the end of 2026, with an initial capacity to host an astonishing 100,000 Nvidia GPUs. OpenAI has also indicated a strong intention for significant expansion beyond this initial phase in the years that follow, signaling a long-term commitment to enhancing AI infrastructure globally to meet future demands.

A cornerstone of this project is its dedication to sustainability; the data center will be powered exclusively by renewable sources, boasting a 230-megawatt capacity. This commitment to green energy not only aligns with environmental goals but also strategically leverages Norway’s abundant hydropower resources, positioning it as one of the largest and most eco-friendly facilities of its kind in Europe.

The choice of Nvidia’s powerful GPUs is a testament to their established dominance in processing complex AI workloads, making them the industry-standard for high-performance computing required in advanced AI projects. Their integration ensures the Stargate facility will be equipped with cutting-edge technology to handle demanding computational tasks and push the boundaries of artificial intelligence.

The initial 20MW phase of the project has secured a substantial investment, with Nscale and Aker each committing approximately $1 billion. The strategic location in Kvandal, near Narvik in northern Norway, was chosen due to its unique combination of readily available hydropower, low local electricity demand, and existing limited transmission capacity, offering an ideal environment for such an energy-intensive operation.

While specific funding details for Nscale’s involvement remain undisclosed, and there are currently no plans for additional ‘Stargate’ facilities, Nscale has articulated its own extensive European expansion plan, suggesting further developments in the region’s digital infrastructure. This massive investment highlights the growing global race to build robust AI capabilities and secure technological leadership.
