The Boston Red Sox have made a pivotal move to fortify their pitching staff, reportedly acquiring veteran left-handed reliever Steven Matz from the St. Louis Cardinals. The deal sees the Red Sox send promising first baseman prospect Blaze Jordan to the Cardinals in exchange for Matz. This trade highlights Boston’s commitment to immediate bullpen improvement, leveraging a prospect from their farm system to address a pressing need in their pitching arsenal.
Matz, a 34-year-old southpaw, is currently in the final year of a four-year, $44 million contract he signed with the Cardinals in November 2021. While initially brought in as a starter after productive stints with the New York Mets and Toronto Blue Jays, his tenure in St. Louis has largely been underwhelming in that primary role.
However, Matz has experienced a notable resurgence this season, finding significant value as a long-relief option for the Cardinals. His performance out of the bullpen has been impressive, boasting a 5-2 record with a commendable 3.44 ERA over 55.0 innings of work. Across 32 appearances, including two starts, he has recorded 48 strikeouts against just nine walks, demonstrating improved control and effectiveness.
This acquisition is particularly timely for the Red Sox, especially given the recent struggles of fellow left-handed reliever Justin Wilson, who has posted a 4.50 ERA in his last nine appearances. Steven Matz’s proven ability to perform in high-leverage situations, particularly against left-handed batters, is expected to add crucial depth and reliability to Boston’s relief corps.
Statistical analysis further supports Matz’s effectiveness against same-sided hitters, with lefties batting a mere .179 against him this season. In contrast, right-handed batters have found more success, hitting .313. This stark contrast underscores his potential as a specialized weapon for manager Alex Cora, especially in late-game matchups.
Matz now joins a Boston Red Sox bullpen already featuring several other left-handed pitchers, including Justin Wilson, Aroldis Chapman, Chris Murphy, and Brennan Bernardino.
