The community of Crest Hill, Illinois, mourns the passing of Dr. Frank Gard Ogren, a beloved physician whose life was a testament to dedication and compassionate care. Born in Lockport, Illinois, Dr. Ogren’s journey began with early education in his hometown, where the seeds of his future vocation were sown. Even from a young age, he harbored a profound desire to serve others, particularly through the noble calling of medicine, a path he pursued with unwavering commitment throughout his remarkable life.
A pivotal moment in Dr. Ogren’s spiritual journey occurred on July 22, 1948, at Covenant Harbor Bible Camp, where he embraced a deep personal faith that would guide his every endeavor. This spiritual foundation complemented his academic pursuits, leading him to the University of Illinois where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Science, laying the groundwork for his distinguished career as an Illinois doctor.
During his college summers, while working at Silver Cross Hospital, Dr. Ogren’s life took a beautiful turn when he met Cheryl Brandenburg, a new nurse who would soon become his beloved wife. Their union on July 12, 1959, marked the beginning of a lifelong partnership. As he diligently pursued his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Illinois’ College of Medicine, Frank and Cherrie welcomed their first daughter, Jill, beginning their cherished family life.
Following a rigorous internship at the University of Illinois Research Hospital, Dr. Ogren honorably served his nation, joining the United States Army as a medical officer on July 21, 1962. His military service took him and his growing family to Japan, where they celebrated the arrival of their second daughter, Beth, further expanding the Ogren family.
Upon completing his military duties, the Ogren family settled in Hinsdale, where their family blossomed with the births of their third and fourth daughters, Deanna and Jeanine. Dr. Ogren dedicated himself not only to his family but also to the broader community, practicing family medicine with a unique blend of personal attention and profound compassion from 1965 to 2000, leaving an enduring medical legacy in the lives of countless patients.
Beyond his professional responsibilities, Dr. Ogren found immense purpose and joy in his unwavering faith and service to the Lord Jesus. He was a foundational member of the newly established Christ Church of Oak Brook, where his contributions were significant. He generously shared his wisdom through teaching Sunday school, served with distinction as an elder, and, notably, enriched worship services with his beloved trumpet, playing praise music with heartfelt devotion.
Dr. Ogren’s commitment extended to various community organizations, underscoring his dedication to community service. He was an active member and past president of the esteemed Oak Brook Men’s Breakfast Club and served on numerous committees at Hinsdale Hospital, demonstrating his multifaceted engagement and leadership within the region. His life exemplified a profound sense of responsibility and active participation in improving the welfare of those around him.
Dr. Ogren was preceded in death by his parents, Elvera Gard Ogren and Clarence Ogren; his sister, Nancy Thermos; and his great-grandson, Crew Abram Smith. The community is invited to pay their respects during a visitation beginning at 9:30 AM, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 AM on Monday, July 28, 2025, at Christ Church of Oak Brook.
