Gregory Joseph Gnall, a remarkable individual whose life was a tapestry woven with dedication, love, and an indomitable spirit, passed away peacefully at his Coaldale home on Sunday morning, July 27, at the age of 76. Surrounded by his cherished family, Greg’s departure marked the end of a profound journey characterized by service, an unwavering commitment to his loved ones, and a quiet yet profound impact on his community.
Born in Shenandoah, Gregory was the beloved son of the late Joseph and Julia (Pascavage) Gnall. His early life was rooted in the Byzantine Catholic faith, which remained a guiding principle throughout his years. After graduating from Mahanoy Area High School in 1967, Greg pursued further education, attending Williamson Trade School and later earning an associate degree in Electrical Engineering from Penn State University, laying the foundation for a diverse and skilled career.
A true patriot, Greg served honorably in the United States Navy during the Vietnam era, a period that instilled in him a deep and abiding respect for all veterans. His commitment to duty extended beyond his military service; early in his career, he demonstrated exceptional craftsmanship as a meticulous mason and welder, showcasing a breadth of talents that would define his professional journey.
For many years, Greg dedicated his expertise as an electrical foreman at Lehigh Coal & Navigation, where his meticulous nature and leadership were highly valued. Beyond his professional endeavors, he was an active and respected Community Figure, holding memberships in the Coaldale American Legion and contributing to the spiritual life of St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church in Mahanoy City, reflecting his deep roots in both civic and religious life.
Greg’s zest for life was evident in his passions, particularly as an Outdoor Enthusiast. He was an avid fisherman, archer, and hunter, always approaching his craft with a humane spirit, much to the hypothetical relief of deer, groundhogs, and starlings. Despite suffering a life-altering back injury at the young age of 27, Greg’s resilience shone through; he never complained about his health or the daily pain, instead embracing life and the great outdoors with an unparalleled vigor.
Above all, Gregory Gnall was a devoted Family Legacy. His 53 wonderful years of marriage to Theresa (McDonald) Gnall were a testament to enduring love. As an unconditionally loving father, his world revolved around his daughter, Laura, who as a child was his constant shadow. Through Laura’s marriage, he welcomed a devoted son, Ben, into his life. Greg found immense pride and joy in his grandchildren, Neena and Cash Peter, leaving them with cherished memories like “Pop-Pop’s mixed-up, twisted fairy tales,” sliding down coal mountains, and fishing for bluegills at a dear friend’s farm.
Greg lived by a profound philosophy: “To live an honest life, you should be able to lay your head down on your pillow at night and get up in the morning and look at yourself in the mirror.” This quote encapsulated his character, reflecting his unwavering integrity and generosity. Whether it was giving the shirt off his back, fixing a car, or baking a cheesecake, Greg never hesitated to offer help to a friend or stranger in need, exemplifying genuine compassion and selflessness.
In addition to his parents, Greg was preceded in death by his brother, Michael Gnall, and nephew, Codey McDonald. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Theresa; his daughter, Laura Gnall-Peter and her husband Benjamin Peter of Egg Harbor Township, NJ; his brother, Joseph Gnall and his wife Mary Louise, of Allentown; his sister, Janet Gnall of Doylestown; his two grandchildren, Neena and Cash Peter; and several nephews and a niece. Services will be held on Monday, August 4, at 11 AM in St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church, Mahanoy City, with interment to follow at Sky-View Memorial Park, Tamaqua, honoring a life well-lived in Coaldale Obituary context.
