Remembering Heinz Mueller: A Life Lived with Passion and Adventure

The life of Heinz Pedro Mueller, who passed away peacefully on July 10, 2025, at the age of 70 after a valiant battle with esophageal cancer, serves as a profound obituary for a man who epitomized courage and an unyielding zest for life. Surrounded by his beloved wife and sons in his final moments, Heinz fought with an inspiring tenacity, never surrendering his hope to live and thrive.

Born on July 29, 1954, in Marktredwitz, Germany, Heinz’s journey to the United States began at the tender age of four when he immigrated with his mother to Reedsburg, Wisconsin. His formative years in Reedsburg culminated in his graduation from Webb High School in 1972, after which he pursued specialized training in the travel industry at Atlantic Airline School in Kansas City, Missouri, subsequently embarking on a career with Allegheny Airlines at O’Hare Airport in Chicago, Illinois.

A significant chapter in Heinz Mueller’s life commenced on October 13, 1973, with his marriage to Bernetta (Berni) Brey. Their early marital years were spent in Rosemont, Illinois, before they returned to Reedsburg in 1978. A true individual, Heinz’s adventurous spirit, particularly his intriguing fascination with Bigfoot hunts, led the family to relocate to Hood River, Oregon, in 1987, a place he cherished and called home until his passing.

Heinz was revered by his extensive network of family and friends, leaving an indelible mark on countless lives through his inherent kindness, compassionate nature, infectious sense of humor, and an unwavering desire to find joy in every aspect of life. He was celebrated as a remarkably generous and loyal friend, possessing an extraordinary talent for repairing almost anything, a gift that proficiently served him throughout his 40-year career in HVAC and facilities maintenance.

More than just a craftsman, Heinz was a quintessential outdoorsman, finding deep solace and boundless joy amidst the majesty of mountains, the tranquility of rivers, and the serenity of forests. His passion for fishing was nothing short of legendary, frequently regaling friends and family with captivating tales of his epic catches. His devotion to his Tenkara rod was so profound that he ensured his sons, relatives, and friends were all equipped with one and mastered its correct usage, spending innumerable peaceful hours on Laurance Lake in his belly boat or gracefully navigating the Metolius River in his waders. Beyond angling, his love for nature extended to avid hiking, camping, and cycling on scenic trails, inspiring many to cultivate a similar appreciation for the natural world.

Heinz possessed an uncommon affinity for climbing trees, with his enthusiasm escalating proportionally with the height of the tree. A towering 110-foot tree in Hamilton Park in southwest Portland held a special place in his heart, serving as a memorable classroom where he imparted his unique skill to his grandsons. Furthermore, Heinz was a passionate music lover, cultivating an impressive vinyl collection that expanded over time, and he relished the experience of cranking up the volume to fully immerse himself in the vibrant vibes of Jimi Hendrix, Ozzy Osbourne, and the memorable one-hit wonders of the 1960s and 1970s.

Heinz’s legacy is carried on by his devoted wife, Berni; his sons, Heinz (Cristina) Mueller of Beaverton, Oregon, and Karl (Nicole) Mueller of Tigard, Oregon; and his cherished grandsons, Marcos, Hayden, and Riley Mueller. He is also survived by his sister Cindy Anderson, brothers Paul and Roy Anderson, a large number of in-laws, several nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless dear friends, all of whom will forever hold his memory close. Heinz was preceded in death by his mother Renate, father Bruno, brother John Anderson, grandparents Christian and Martha Pfletcher, uncle Heinz Haenel, sister-in-law Monica Ritzer, and special family Laurie Brey.

A poignant community tribute to honor and celebrate Heinz’s remarkable life is scheduled for Saturday, August 16, at 3 p.m. at Smith Memorial Presbyterian Church in Fairview, Oregon. Family and friends are warmly invited to attend this gathering to remember and celebrate his life.
