This substantial funding round marks a pivotal moment for the foundation, aligning with its ambitious new Five-Year Action Plan designed to address critical community priorities and bolster vital social services across Rhode Island.
Spearheaded by President and CEO David N. Cicilline, this initiative reflects a collaborative effort, with over 2,000 community members contributing to the action plan’s creation. The strategic focus areas include housing initiatives and economic mobility, fostering healthy and strong communities, and advancing education and student success, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to community well-being through strategic philanthropy.
Among the key recipients, the WARM Center, dedicated to assisting homeless and needy individuals throughout Washington County, secured $70,000. This crucial grant will specifically bolster its Interim Housing services, providing a safe haven and vital support for participants to regain confidence and independence through reconnection with essential community resources like education, employment, and healthcare, contributing significantly to community development.
The United Theatre, recognized as more than just an arts complex, is set to utilize its funding to expand its reach as a cultural anchor. Executive Director Carly Callahan emphasized the organization’s role in fostering connection and creativity. The grant will enable the expansion of scholarships, outreach programs, after-school initiatives, and free or low-cost community programming, ultimately enriching the lives of over 11,000 individuals regionally through vital social services.
In Charlestown, Southern Rhode Island Volunteers received a $25,000 grant to enhance its aging-in-place services. This organization is committed to promoting independent living for individuals aged 55 and older in various communities including Westerly, Charlestown, Hopkinton, and Richmond, through volunteer engagement and supportive activities, further exemplifying targeted philanthropy.
South County Habitat for Humanity is also making significant strides with its largest project yet, the 22-home Hickory Knoll development in Westerly, currently undergoing permitting. Executive Director Colin Penney highlighted the critical demand for affordable and healthy homes, underscoring homeownership as a pathway out of poverty and a means to build generational wealth and community roots, aligning with essential housing initiatives.
Other notable local beneficiaries include the Westerly Land Trust and the Jonnycake Center of Westerly, further illustrating the widespread impact of these grant funding efforts. Many of these awards originate from the foundation’s newly launched Community Priority and Capacity Building grant programs, integral to their Five-Year Action Plan for sustained community development.
A significant portion of the grants, $2 million, is specifically allocated to organizations grappling with reduced federal funding due to recent national policy changes. Cicilline emphasized the direct impact of these cuts on Rhode Islanders, leading to challenges like food pantry shortages, job reductions, and diminished access to vital services in healthcare, housing, and hunger relief, with nearly 90% of affected Rhode Island nonprofits anticipating service cuts.
An additional $160,000 from the $6.1 million total is channeled through the foundation’s Basic Human Needs grant program. This crucial program provides emergency assistance, with grants up to $5,000, supporting community-based initiatives that directly address essential needs such as food, clothing, and housing for Rhode Islanders facing the greatest hardship, reinforcing the importance of dedicated social services.
