Ronald Eugene Lewis, a venerable figure who profoundly impacted his community, peacefully passed away on July 28, 2025, at the age of 91 in Lawrence, Kansas. Born in Topeka, Kansas, on August 8, 1933, to Vernon Dean and Ada Josephine Lewis, his life journey was marked by dedicated service and heartfelt personal pursuits, embodying the spirit of a true Kansan. His long and fulfilling life will be remembered by all who knew him.
Ron’s formative years largely unfolded in Emporia, Kansas, where he moved at the tender age of eight. It was there that he cultivated deep roots, graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1951. A significant milestone in his early life was his marriage to Mildred Louise Sill on December 5, 1952, a union that would last an incredible 67 years, serving as a cornerstone of his existence.
A testament to his unwavering commitment to his nation, Ron proudly served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955. Stationed at Camp Gordon near Augusta, Georgia, he fulfilled duties as a military police officer, upholding order and discipline. His service also showcased his lifelong affection for music, as he lent his talents to the Army band, playing the trombone with passion and skill.
Following his honorable discharge, Ron transitioned into a distinguished career in law enforcement, serving as a police officer at Emporia State University. His tenure, which concluded with his retirement in December 1995, was characterized by diligence and dedication. Beyond his professional responsibilities, he remained a fervent supporter of Hornet athletics, often found cheering enthusiastically at basketball and football games.
Approximately two decades ago, Ron and Mildred embarked on a new chapter, relocating to Lawrence, Kansas. This move broadened his horizons and deepened his connection to the state’s vibrant sports culture. He quickly assimilated into the local community, becoming an ardent fan of the University of Kansas Jayhawks, enjoying both their basketball and football programs with characteristic zeal.
Ron’s rich tapestry of life extended beyond professional duties and sports fandom. He harbored a profound appreciation for the natural world, finding immense solace and joy in fishing and exploring the breathtaking scenery of Wyoming and Yellowstone National Park. In his later years, he cultivated a unique and adventurous palate, developing a keen taste for craft beer and proudly attending the esteemed Great American Beer Festival in Denver, an experience he often recalled with great fondness.
Ron was preceded in death by his beloved parents and his devoted wife, Mildred, who passed in 2019, leaving a void. He is lovingly survived by his brother, Bill Lewis of Topeka, and his cherished children: Rhonda Russell (Randy) of Lawrence, Chip Lewis of Cowley, Wyoming, and Mike Lewis (Heidi) of Lawrence. His legacy continues through his numerous grandchildren—Nathan, Melanie, Spencer, Tara, Elizabeth, Charlene—and his vibrant great-grandchildren—Alexis, Julianna, Bailey, Willow, Lily, McKinley, Lincoln, Hunter, Chrysta, Merrick, Hanna, Kannon—along with many adoring nieces and nephews who will deeply miss his presence and warmth.
