Stephen Kolek, initially drafted by the Dodgers in 2018, joined the Padres via the 2023 Rule 5 draft and spent the entirety of the 2024 season in their bullpen. The 28-year-old right-hander has taken 14 rotation turns for San Diego this year, recording a 4.18 ERA and 1.31 WHIP over 79.2 innings, complemented by 56 strikeouts and 26 walks.
Kolek’s strengths lie in his solid control and a high 50% groundball rate, attributes that make him an appealing pitching prospect. For the Padres, Freddy Fermin has been a notable success story since his rookie emergence in 2023, establishing himself as one of the better-hitting backup catchers in Major League Baseball. Although his offensive numbers this season—a .255/.309/.339 slash line with three home homes in 67 games—are modest, his overall value extends beyond the bat.
Fermin excels in key defensive metrics, grading above-average for framing pitches, blocking, and exhibiting quick pop times on throws to second base, crucial for controlling the running game. His strong bat control and low strikeout rate further enhance his appeal, particularly given his historical effectiveness when facing left-handed pitching, making him an immediate upgrade for San Diego.
