Sen. Luján Leads Push to Reverse Federal Health Care Cuts

U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján, alongside fellow Democratic senators, has initiated a legislative effort to counteract significant healthcare policy reductions embedded within the recently enacted federal budget reconciliation bill. This move comes as communities nationwide, particularly in states like New Mexico, begin to grapple with the profound implications of these far-reaching budgetary adjustments on vital health services.

The proposed legislation specifically targets the comprehensive “health” section of the Republican-backed reconciliation law. This includes provisions that directly impact cornerstone programs such as Medicaid and Medicare, which have served as critical lifelines for millions of Americans for decades. The senators’ bill seeks to entirely nullify these specific cuts, aiming to restore previously allocated funding and safeguard essential healthcare access.

In New Mexico, the repercussions of the reconciliation bill are already a pressing concern for families. Senator Luján underscored the anxieties of constituents, citing parents of critically ill children who are questioning their ability to afford necessary medical care once these cuts are fully implemented. This local perspective highlights the very real human impact behind the complex fiscal measures.

Despite the Democratic senators’ legislative push, the prospect of reversing elements of the multi-trillion-dollar spending and tax proposal remains challenging. President Donald Trump signed the reconciliation bill into law on July 4, making any attempt to undo its provisions an uphill battle, even though its passage in both the House and Senate occurred by relatively narrow margins.

The reconciliation bill’s original passage elicited a spectrum of reactions across New Mexico. While some hailed its inclusion of radiation exposure compensation for New Mexicans and Republican lawmakers saw it as a boost for working families, numerous local Democratic leaders vehemently condemned it as a devastating assault on crucial social service programs, especially Medicaid funding.

Initial projections from the Health Care Authority in New Mexico paint a stark picture: the state stands to lose over $2 billion in Medicaid funding due to the reconciliation bill. This reduction could necessitate increased paperwork for over 250,000 New Mexicans to retain their enrollment, and tragically, more than 88,000 residents are projected to lose their Medicaid coverage entirely, exacerbating existing healthcare disparities.

Furthermore, the bill’s provisions are anticipated to lead to the closure of six to eight rural New Mexico hospitals within two years. Although the reconciliation bill included a $50 billion rural health fund, analysis by KFF reveals this sum represents only 37% of the funding healthcare providers in rural areas are set to lose from the Medicaid spending cuts, indicating a significant shortfall in mitigating the adverse effects.

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham also marked the 60th anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid by vocally opposing the congressional Republicans’ budget reconciliation bill. She asserted that congressional Republicans prioritized tax cuts for the wealthy over healthcare for working families, warning that the Medicaid cuts would severely damage New Mexico’s healthcare system and force the closure of vital rural hospitals.

The U.S. Senate Democrats’ newly introduced bill directly proposes to strike the entire “health” section of the reconciliation law. This encompasses all provisions related to Medicaid, Medicare, and associated health-related taxes, representing a direct attempt to fully restore the funding and protections for these essential healthcare programs across the nation.
