During the event, Strickland was cornering his Xtreme Couture teammate, Miles Hunsinger, alongside fellow UFC fighter Chris Curtis. It was during this period that the explosive confrontation unfolded, drawing immediate attention and condemnation, particularly due to Strickland’s high-profile status within the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
Following the highly publicized incident, the Nevada Athletic Commission swiftly moved to suspend Strickland indefinitely. This significant disciplinary action is set to remain in effect until a full disciplinary hearing, which is anticipated to take place in August, determines the ultimate consequences for the former champion’s disruptive behavior.
Adding another layer to the complex narrative, former UFC fighter Josh Thomson has voiced a controversial perspective, arguing that the amateur fighter involved in the altercation also bears responsibility for the incident. Thomson, renowned for his candid views, suggested that the victim’s actions instigated the brawl, implying they should face similar repercussions for their perceived role in provoking the confrontation.
Thomson passionately advocated for a principle of “equal justice,” asserting that if Sean Strickland is to be punished for his attack, then the amateur fighter should not be exempt from disciplinary action for their alleged instigation. He controversially remarked, “I wish Sean would have finished the job, man. However, these remarks were met with swift pushback from legendary former MMA referee John McCarthy, Thomson’s podcast co-host.
