The collaboration between VFW Calabash Post 7288 and its Auxiliary underscores a shared vision of enhancing veteran well-being. By pooling resources and passion, these organizations are directly funding the intensive animal training required for a canine companion destined to serve a veteran in need. This sponsorship highlights the powerful impact local VFW chapters have within the larger military community.
Central to this endeavor is Canines For Service (CFS), a distinguished 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established in 1996. Recognized as North Carolina’s longest-running, internationally accredited service dog provider, CFS shifted its exclusive focus to veterans in 2018, recognizing the profound need. Their expertly trained service dogs offer indispensable assistance to veterans grappling with service-connected PTSD, traumatic brain injuries, mobility challenges, and related trauma. To date, CFS has successfully placed over 100 such dogs across the United States, with a majority serving veterans.
The VFW’s substantial $5,000 sponsorship commitment covers critical initial expenses for the puppy, including acquisition, essential supplies like a crate, bed, toys, and a puppy vest, along with a full year of comprehensive veterinary care. A unique aspect of this generous contribution allows the VFW post the special privilege of naming the puppy and receiving regular progress reports throughout its rigorous training journey, fostering a deeper connection to this impactful veterans support project.
The tangible beginning of this partnership saw nine members from both the VFW Calabash Post 7288 and its Auxiliary travel to the CFS facility in Wilmington. There, they received an exclusive tour, witnessed an impressive demonstration of dogs in training, and formally presented their sponsorship check, marking the official commencement of a rigorous two-year training process. This visit underscored the extraordinary amount of teamwork and dedicated effort invested in preparing a service dog for its profound role.
The animal training journey for these future heroes is meticulous and multi-staged. Beginning at just eight weeks old, puppies undergo foundational basic obedience training. Foster families play a crucial role, caring for the pups on weekends for six months, exposing them to children and teaching home etiquette and calmness. Dedicated volunteer dog handlers further refine their skills, teaching fundamental commands like sit, stay, heel, and obey. CFS strategically selects Retrievers and Retriever-mixes, recognizing their optimal suitability for this demanding work, as puppies advance through basic, intermediate, and advanced levels, each requiring stringent evaluations for progression.
During advanced training, each dog undergoes a comprehensive evaluation to discern its unique strengths. This assessment, combined with an understanding of a veteran’s specific and individual needs, enables CFS to precisely match and tailor a service dog’s training to the veteran it will serve. Upon successful graduation, the veteran travels to Wilmington to meet their perfectly matched companion. A trained service dog not only transforms the veteran’s life but also profoundly impacts their families, support networks, and caregivers, leading to a massive enhancement in overall quality of life. The commitment from CFS extends beyond placement, with their Veteran Services Coordinator ensuring continuous support post-pairing.

VFW Auxiliary President Cathy Milstead expressed pride in the joint effort to directly assist a veteran in need, extending gratitude to the community for their unwavering support through various fundraising initiatives like Bingo and Craft Fairs. Commander Wayne Grigsby of VFW Calabash Post 7288 enthusiastically announced plans to make this a permanent annual donation, ensuring continuous veterans support by sponsoring a new dog each year for deserving veterans.
