Washington County Expands Crucial Veteran Services Outreach for Benefits Access

Veteran Services outreach is significantly expanding in Washington County, ensuring local heroes and their families can more easily access the vital benefits they’ve earned through their dedicated service. This crucial initiative aims to streamline the often-complex process of obtaining military benefits and support, reflecting a profound commitment to the veteran community.

Currently, the Washington County Veterans Service Office provides essential assistance by appointment at the Washington County Courthouse in Jonesborough. Veterans seeking help with their paperwork and bureaucracy can schedule consultations weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. by contacting the office directly. This established service acts as a primary point of contact for eligible individuals.

In a significant move to enhance accessibility and veteran outreach, service officers will now dedicate Wednesdays to appointments at the Johnson City Vet Center. This expansion allows officers to connect with veterans already utilizing the center for counseling services, offering a convenient “one-stop shop” approach for comprehensive support and government assistance.

Washington County Mayor Joe Grandy underscored the importance of this expanded presence, noting the region’s growing veteran population, significantly bolstered by the presence of a top-tier Veterans Affairs Medical Center at Mountain Home. The mayor reiterated the county government’s strong interest in helping veterans access every benefit they have rightfully earned.

Dawn Lucier and Cole Matthews, experienced Veteran Service Officers, are central to this mission. Their expertise lies in guiding veterans, their spouses, and dependents through the often-daunting maze of government paperwork, ensuring claims are accurately filed and processed. Their role is critical in demystifying bureaucratic processes.

The Washington County Veterans Service Office prides itself on being a comprehensive resource. It handles a wide array of disability claims, including those for service-connected benefits, pensions, and non-service connected benefits. Furthermore, the office provides crucial assistance for spouses and dependent children of deceased veterans, covering a broad spectrum of needs.

Both Lucier and Matthews hold certifications as Veteran Service Officers and undergo continuous, extensive training annually. This commitment ensures they remain fully updated on the latest regulations from the VA, federal, and state governments, guaranteeing that veterans receive accurate and current information regarding their entitlements and military benefits.

Once paperwork is filed through their office, claims typically undergo a processing period of six to nine months.
