The West High Wolf Pack flag football team stands on the cusp of a transformative new season, fueled by the appointment of a familiar face as its new head coach. Anticipation is building as the third flag football season within the CIF San Joaquin Section rapidly approaches, promising a fresh start under dynamic leadership.
Aria Afshar, a proud alumnus of West High, has returned to his roots, embracing the challenge of guiding the Wolf Pack football program. His transition into the head coaching role follows a valuable tenure as a volunteer assistant at Tracy High during the previous season, providing him with critical insights into the rapidly evolving landscape of flag football.
Expressing profound enthusiasm, Afshar articulated his excitement for the journey ahead, highlighting the promising blend of talent within the squad. “We have a great group of girls here,” Afshar stated, noting the presence of both seasoned returners and a significant influx of new, athletic players eager to contribute. This confluence of experience and fresh potential marks an invigorating period for the team and West High athletics.
Afshar steps into a situation that demands a comprehensive rebuilding effort. Over its initial two years, the Wolf Pack has grappled with significant challenges, accumulating an overall record of 1-25. This includes a winless 0-12 debut season and a 1-13 performance last fall, with the team still pursuing its inaugural victory within the competitive Tri-City Athletic League in high school sports.
To address these historical struggles, Afshar is implementing a fresh coaching philosophy rooted in fundamental mastery and unwavering enthusiasm. He is meticulously drilling down on every minute detail in practice, from precision flag-grabbing techniques and correct route running to perfectly timed throws. He is supported in this endeavor by the experienced long-time coach O’Hara, who also worked alongside him at Tracy High in youth sports development.
Afshar’s primary objective for his inaugural season is to establish a robust foundation and set a high standard for the program’s future. He aims to ensure that all players gain a deep, comprehensive understanding of the game’s intricacies and their roles on the field. Beyond skill development, he aspires for the Wolf Pack to demonstrate competitive spirit and consistent growth with each game played.
The broader implications of flag football’s growth provide additional motivation. Afshar recognizes the significant opportunities the sport now offers, including emerging scholarship pathways at various colleges. With its inclusion in the Olympics and the NFL’s active promotion, flag football empowers young women to transcend traditional athletic boundaries, experience novel challenges, and engage in competitive play while fostering enjoyment.
A key goal for Afshar, alongside attracting new talent, is to bolster player numbers sufficiently to establish a junior varsity team. Currently, flag football remains one of the few programs at West High to field only a varsity squad. The Wolf Pack is scheduled to commence its 2025 campaign on August 20 at Weston Ranch, with their much-anticipated home opener against Millennium set for August 28 at Steve Lopez Stadium.
