Wyoming Guard Leader Appointed Army National Guard Deputy Surgeon General

Brigadier General Toby J. Alkire, a distinguished leader from the Wyoming National Guard, has been selected for a significant national role, assuming the duties of Deputy Surgeon General for the U.S. Army National Guard within the Office of the Surgeon General.

This prestigious appointment underscores Alkire’s extensive experience and leadership capabilities, placing him at the forefront of critical developments within the nation’s military health system.

The dual-hat assignment, which commenced on June 1, 2024, is slated to run for two years, concluding on May 31, 2027, allowing General Alkire to continue his vital responsibilities as the deputy adjutant general of the Wyoming National Guard.

In this expanded capacity, General Alkire will operate under the direct supervision of Army Surgeon General Lt. Gen. Mary Izaguirre, contributing to strategic initiatives that will shape the future of military healthcare across the country.

Expressing profound gratitude for the opportunity, Alkire stated, “This is an amazing opportunity to support the future of Army transformation at the national level while representing Wyoming,” highlighting the profound significance of his service to both his home state and the broader national defense framework.

He further elaborated on the dynamic nature of his new purview, noting, “The military health system is particularly dynamic and rapidly evolving,” underscoring the complexities and challenges inherent in modern military medicine that he is now poised to address.

The role, while demanding, does not necessitate a full-time relocation, allowing General Alkire to fulfill his duties in a Title 10 status, with periodic travel to the U.S. Army Medical Command headquarters in Falls Church, Virginia, as required.

His service at this elevated level is not only a personal honor but also a testament to the caliber of leadership fostered within the Wyoming National Guard, poised to contribute significantly to national health and readiness priorities.
