Zakk Wylde Reveals Ozzy Osbourne’s Emotional Final Text Message Weeks Before Passing

The music world recently paused to reflect on the profound bond shared between legendary heavy metal icon Ozzy Osbourne and his longtime guitarist, Zakk Wylde, as Wylde unveiled the incredibly emotional final text messages exchanged between the two just weeks before Osbourne’s passing at the age of 76.

Wylde, 58, recounted how this poignant digital conversation unfolded following what would become the Prince of Darkness’s last live performance on July 5 in Birmingham, England. Despite the monumental occasion, Wylde unfortunately did not have the opportunity to reconnect with Osbourne backstage after the show, a chaotic scene that prevented a personal farewell.

Though aware of Osbourne’s declining health, Wylde had anticipated a future reunion, a chance to see his mentor again in the coming days. However, fate intervened, leading to a heartfelt exchange of messages that would serve as their ultimate communication, solidifying a bond that transcended the professional.

The Black Sabbath guitarist divulged the intimate content of their last texts: “The last text I got from Oz was saying, ‘Zakky, sorry, it was like a madhouse back there. I didn’t see you.’ He goes, ‘Thanks for everything.’ It was just us talking, saying, ‘I love you, buddy.’ That was it.” This tender exchange underscored the deep affection and mutual respect between the two musicians.

Wylde fondly recalled his last visual memory of the iconic rocker, stating, “Seeing Oz onstage when Sabbath got done, that’s the last time I saw him.” He further elaborated on Osbourne’s immense personal impact, describing him not just as a collaborator but as a quasi-familial figure, akin to an “older brother” with whom he could share both good times and seek crucial advice, much like his own father.

The profound impact of Osbourne’s final public appearance was magnified by its philanthropic nature. Wylde highlighted the extraordinary fact that Osbourne’s last concert was part of a record-breaking charity event, emphasizing the rock legend’s commitment to helping others over personal gain, a testament to his incredible character and legacy.

When prompted by an interviewer about the uniquely familial dynamic of his relationship with the “Crazy Train” singer compared to other guitarists, Wylde readily affirmed, expressing, “It was – with all your friends in your life, lions attract lions, you know? And the hyenas you hang out with, that sorts itself out later! But Ozzy was the easiest-going, warmest guy. He was so easy to get along with.”

Wylde’s professional journey with Osbourne began spectacularly with his debut on the 1988 album “No Rest for the Wicked,” quickly establishing himself as a formidable talent. His contributions continued on subsequent acclaimed records like 1991’s “No More Tears” and 1995’s “Ozzmosis.” He rejoined Osbourne’s band in 2001 and remained a pivotal part of the “Mama, I’m Coming Home” singer’s touring circle, most notably returning for the “No More Tours II” tour in 2017.

The sad news of Ozzy Osbourne’s passing was later confirmed by his family – Sharon, Jack, Kelly, Aimee, and Louis – in a statement that conveyed their profound sorrow: “It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time.” This final confirmation brought a somber close to the life of a true rock icon.
