49ers Rookie Alfred Collins Struggles, Coach Saleh Explains Challenges

The San Francisco 49ers’ training camp has brought mixed news regarding their rookie defensive linemen, with particular focus on second-round pick Alfred Collins, whose initial struggles have become a significant talking point. While some rookies are quickly acclimating, Collins is visibly grappling with the demands of professional football, drawing candid remarks from head coach Robert Saleh about his current readiness.

Through intense one-on-one pass-rush drills, Collins has consistently found himself on the losing end, a stark contrast to expectations for a high draft pick. His performance has raised questions about his immediate impact, prompting observers to analyze the underlying reasons for his difficult transition into the NFL.

Head coach Robert Saleh addressed Collins’ challenges directly, attributing a significant portion of his slow start to an injury that sidelined him during crucial offseason activities. Collins missed both the Organized Team Activities (OTAs) and minicamp due to a calf injury, preventing him from integrating into the team’s schemes and getting into optimal football shape before training camp commenced.

Despite the current setbacks, Saleh remains optimistic about Collins’ long-term potential, emphasizing that his physical attributes—namely his large frame and agile footwork—are foundational qualities that cannot be taught. Saleh expressed confidence that with continued hard work and more time on the field, Collins will overcome his initial “behind the eight ball” status and begin to make a noticeable impact for the San Francisco 49ers.

A crucial factor in Collins’ prospective development is the presence of Kris Kocurek, widely regarded as one of the National Football League’s premier defensive line coaches. Kocurek’s proven track record in molding raw talent into productive NFL players offers a significant advantage, suggesting that if Collins can maintain his health, he is in capable hands for his player development.

Interestingly, Collins’ situation bears a striking resemblance to that of former 49ers first-round pick Javon Kinlaw. Kinlaw also entered the league as a raw prospect whose development was hampered by a series of injuries early in his career. However, Kinlaw’s fortunes turned once he achieved sustained health, leading to significant improvement in his play.

Kinlaw’s recent success, culminating in a lucrative extension with the Washington Commanders after two healthy and productive seasons, provides a clear blueprint and a beacon of hope for Alfred Collins. This parallel underscores the belief that despite a challenging start to his NFL rookie journey, Collins possesses the inherent talent and the necessary coaching support to eventually thrive and become a key contributor to the 49ers’ defensive line.
