Utilizing an extensive dataset of over 200,000 anonymized chat logs from Microsoft’s Bing Copilot AI chatbot, researchers meticulously analyzed how individuals are leveraging AI for various tasks. Lead author Kiran Tomlinson and her team concluded that AI’s most significant applicability lies in areas such as information provision, assistance, writing, teaching, and advising. This novel approach allowed them to assign an “AI applicability score” to numerous professions, indicating the degree to which AI chatbots could assist or potentially integrate into daily tasks.

The findings highlight several professions with a remarkably high AI applicability score, suggesting they are particularly vulnerable to significant shifts, if not outright replacement. Interpreters and translators, hosts and hostesses, and notably, customer service representatives, stand out in this category. For instance, the research indicates that over 2.8 million customer service roles could see considerable AI integration, underscoring AI’s efficiency in handling routine inquiries and information dissemination, which are core functions of these roles.

Conversely, the research offers reassuring news for many skilled industrial workers whose roles demand intricate technical knowledge and physical presence. Professions such as dredge operators, bridge and lock tenders, and water treatment operators were consistently ranked among those least likely to be supplanted by AI. These roles often involve complex environmental interactions, specialized machinery, and unpredictable physical conditions that current AI technologies are ill-equipped to manage autonomously.

Beyond industrial sectors, various medical professions also demonstrate exceptionally low AI applicability, signaling their enduring human necessity. Oral surgeons, surgical assistants, and nursing assistants, for example, require a nuanced blend of empathy, critical thinking, fine motor skills, and direct human interaction that AI cannot replicate. The intricate nature of patient care and the unpredictable variables in healthcare settings make these careers highly resistant to full automation.

It is crucial to understand that a high AI applicability score does not automatically equate to job elimination; rather, it signifies the potential for AI to enhance efficiency or streamline tasks within a profession. While AI advocates often champion the potential for AI impact to lead to new job creation through increased productivity, the Microsoft authors acknowledge that layoffs are a distinct possibility in industries where artificial intelligence can significantly improve operational efficiency. Interestingly, the study also identified some surprising roles with high AI applicability, challenging conventional wisdom about AI’s reach. Radio hosts and DJs, for instance, were ranked among the professions most likely to be impacted, indicating AI’s growing capacity for content generation and interactive communication. Gates has speculated that humans might not be needed “for most things,” echoing the study’s implicit warning about potential workforce reductions in highly applicable industries.
