Roswell, New Mexico, mourns the passing of Andres Veloz Gutierrez, who departed on Monday, July 28, 2025, at the age of 73. A cherished individual, Andres’s life was a testament to his vibrant spirit, profound musical talent, unwavering dedication to his family, and a selfless commitment to his community. His memory will be eternally treasured by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Born on November 10, 1951, in the picturesque Juan Mata Ortiz, Chihuahua, Mexico, Andres was the beloved son of Cleofas Veloz Hernandez and Florentina Gutierrez. His early years in Mexico laid the foundation for a life characterized by hard work, creativity, and deep familial bonds, which he carried with him throughout his journey.
Andres embarked on his professional path at the TMC Bussing Plant, where he dedicated his initial efforts. He later transitioned into the construction industry, where he spent many years as a diligent laborer. His hands helped remodel countless homes and construct barns, leaving a tangible mark on the landscapes and lives of those he served, demonstrating his tireless work ethic.
Beyond his labors, Andres harbored a profound passion for music, a gift that ran deep within his family’s veins. He was a truly talented musician, adept at playing a variety of instruments, including the accordion, piano, and guitar. This shared love for melody culminated in the formation of Grupo Cañon, a family band that brought joy and rhythm to many, showcasing their collective artistic spirit.
His character was defined by numerous admirable traits, but two stood out prominently: his innate desire to assist anyone in need and his endearing willingness to share a joke, particularly with his family. Andres’s generosity and jovial nature endeared him to everyone, making him a beacon of warmth and support within his circle.
Andres leaves behind a rich tapestry of family who will forever cherish his memory. His surviving children include Aimee Cardenas (Jr), Noehmy Medrano (Eddie), Lionel Aguilar (Kristen), and Adam Payan (Dora). His legacy further extends through his numerous grandchildren, including Emmanuel A. Cardenas, Andres E. Cardenas, Magali Barraza, Jeniffer Medrano, Jessie Medrano, Amy Janelle Payan, Greg Morales, Daniel Fitzpatrick, Lionel Aguilar Jr., Andrew Aguilar, Cassandra Aguilar, David Maciel, Gloria Molina, Anthony Aguilar, Noah Aguilar, and Cortland Stickler.
His enduring family tree also includes thirty-seven great-grandchildren and multiple great-great-grandchildren, alongside his siblings, Amalia Hernandez, Luis Veloz, and Eulalia Avila Veloz. Andres was preceded in death by his parents, Cleofas Veloz Hernandez and Florentina Gutierrez, his siblings Jose Veloz, Ejinio Veloz, Juan Carlos Veloz, and Carmen Barraza, and his grandson, Hector Ray Medrano.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Alejandra, Andres’s mother-in-law, for her unwavering daily assistance, and to the dedicated staff at Sunset Villa Health, especially Lupita, Valerie, Sean, and Tamara, for their exceptional care. Special appreciation is also given to Interim Hospice for their continuous support. The profound love and steadfast presence of his family, including Tia Rafaela Veloz, Gloria, and Nena, have been an immense source of comfort during this challenging time, for which the family is eternally grateful.
