Dubuque’s Premier DBQFest Arts Festival Kicks Off This Weekend

The highly anticipated DBQFest, Iowa’s longest-running arts festival, is set to transform Washington Square this weekend, promising an immersive celebration of creativity and community spirit. This vibrant event will feature an eclectic mix of visual artists, artisan vendors, and dynamic live entertainment across two stages, ensuring a captivating experience for all attendees. Designed as a truly inclusive gathering, the festival also boasts free family-friendly activities, invigorating community yoga sessions, a diverse array of food and libations, and much more, making it a cornerstone among Iowa events.

Scheduled for Saturday, August 2nd, and Sunday, August 3rd, the Dubuque arts festival will unfold in the picturesque setting of Washington Square. Presented by the esteemed Dubuque County Fine Arts Society, this free-admission festival invites visitors from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. The meticulously planned schedule guarantees a wealth of engaging events and diverse activities, catering to various interests and age groups throughout the weekend.

A central highlight of DBQFest is the participation of over 50 juried visual artists hailing from across the Midwest. These talented individuals represent a wide spectrum of creative disciplines, showcasing masterful works ranging from intricate ceramics and captivating paintings to evocative photography, detailed fiber art, exquisite woodcraft, vibrant stained glass, and unique jewelry pieces. Their collective presence underscores the festival’s commitment to showcasing regional artistic excellence and providing a platform for diverse expressions.

Beyond the traditional art fair, DBQFest proudly features innovative portable murals, a testament to the creative prowess of area teens. Developed through a City of Dubuque Special Projects grant, this initiative was expertly led by local muralist Zore 64 (Mario Gonzalez) in collaboration with the Dubuque Museum of Art. The project offered young artists an invaluable opportunity to delve into mural-making, allowing them to reflect their personal experiences and perspectives through large-scale public art.

Building on this artistic collaboration, the second phase of the project will see Zore 64 on site, engaging in a dynamic live entertainment graffiti painting activation. This exciting live demonstration will take place on specially prepared skate ramps, executed in partnership with Olliewood Action Sports. These unique ramps are slated to be featured again at the Blockoctober Fest in September, extending the impact and visibility of this cutting-edge urban art.

Further enhancing the festival’s appeal to younger audiences and families, a variety of family friendly activities are planned. These include engaging yoga sessions specifically designed for children, thoughtfully provided by Challenge to Change. Additionally, attendees can unleash their poetic creativity with personalized poetry crafting, offered by Oracle Poets from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. The City of Dubuque’s Rec & Roll trailer will also be present throughout Sunday, adding another layer of interactive fun.

The festival also serves as a vibrant hub for community engagement, with numerous booths representing local organizations. Participants include the Bluff Strokes Art Center, Carnegie-Stout Public Library Maker Space, Challenge to Change, Centrally Rooted, Dubuque NAACP & the Nathaniel Morgan Memorial Committee, Dubuque Pride, Dubuque Rescue Mission, Dubuque Unidos, Multicultural Family Center, and Volunteer Dubuque. This extensive presence highlights DBQFest’s role as one of the key community festivals, fostering connections and celebrating the rich tapestry of Dubuque’s civic life.

DBQFest stands as a testament to Dubuque’s thriving cultural landscape, offering a unique blend of high-caliber art, captivating performances, and enriching community interactions. It is more than just an art show; it is a convergence of talent, passion, and local spirit, inviting everyone to partake in a weekend of inspiration and shared experiences in the heart of Washington Square.
