Scheduled to run from September 18 to 21, this cherished annual cultural festival promises an extraordinary opportunity for city exploration, with more than 150 of Glasgow’s most iconic buildings, revered cultural landmarks, and even concealed spaces opening their doors. This free event offers rare, behind-the-scenes access, enabling thousands to discover the secrets and stories embedded within the very fabric of the city.
Organised by the dedicated Glasgow Buildings Preservation Trust, and supported by key entities such as Glasgow City Trust and Glasgow Life, the festival has been an indispensable part of Glasgow’s cultural calendar since 1990. It proudly stands as a significant component of Doors Open Days, a national celebration of heritage coordinated across Scotland by the Scottish Civic Trust.
This year’s festival theme, ‘Glasgow: The Visionary City,’ has been thoughtfully selected to celebrate the myriad individuals and movements that have contributed to shaping Glasgow into the innovative, creative, and resilient metropolis it is today. This theme deeply resonates with the broader Glasgow 850 celebrations, marking the 850th anniversary of Glasgow’s Burgh status through a diverse array of year-long events designed to illuminate the city’s profound history, dynamic culture, and future aspirations.
Reflecting on over three decades of dedication, David Cook, CEO of Glasgow Building Preservation Trust, emphasised their pride in organising the festival, which consistently champions the city’s rich architectural heritage and vibrant cultural legacy. Over the course of four days, a substantial influx of visitors is expected to engage with the extensive programme, which includes exploring open buildings, participating in family-friendly workshops, enjoying captivating performances and exhibitions, and even dancing in traditional ceilidhs, fostering a profound sense of community engagement.
The Festival Hub, strategically located at the Advanced Research Centre, will serve as a buzzing epicentre of activity. Here, attendees can immerse themselves in a dynamic schedule of complimentary exhibitions, informative talks, compelling films, interactive workshops, and various family-oriented events, all thoughtfully inspired by the ‘Visionary City’ theme.
Furthermore, the festival has forged a significant partnership to spotlight ‘Mackintosh Illuminated,’ a special project honouring the enduring legacy of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret Macdonald, two of Glasgow’s most revered creative minds. This initiative underscores the festival’s commitment to showcasing both hidden gems and iconic landmarks within Glasgow, reinforcing its status as a world-class city.
Niall Murphy, Director of Glasgow City Heritage Trust, expressed delight in the festival’s return, highlighting its crucial role in showcasing Glasgow’s architectural heritage and narrating the compelling stories of those who have profoundly influenced the city. Echoing this sentiment, Bailie Annette Christie, Chair of Glasgow Life and Convenor for Culture, Sport and International Relations for Glasgow City Council, celebrated Glasgow’s extraordinary architecture and vibrant cultural sector.
