International Abstract Art Exhibition Debuts in Hilo, Featuring Global Artists

Hilo is set to become a vibrant hub of artistic expression with the highly anticipated opening of the 15th Annual Abstract Only exhibition. This prestigious event brings together a remarkable collection of abstract works, showcasing the diverse talents of artists from both Hawaii and the esteemed Shanghai Abstract Artists Association.

The excitement culminates tonight with the exhibition’s opening reception, scheduled from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Attendees will have the unique opportunity to welcome four artists representing the Shanghai Abstract Artists Association and witness the announcement of this year’s Hawaii award winners, marking a significant moment for the local arts community.

Running through August 28, the ‘Abstract Only’ exhibition represents a profound partnership between the Wailoa Center, the Hawaii Island Art Alliance, the Shanghai Abstract Artists Association, and the Putuo Art Museum, a branch of the renowned Liu Haisu Art Museum. This collaboration underscores a shared commitment to fostering global artistic dialogue and cultural exchange.

“It is deeply meaningful to hold an abstract art exchange exhibition in two places with such different cultures and artistic discourse,” stated Zhao Kangwei, president of the Shanghai Association for Foreign Exchange. His words resonate with the exhibition’s core philosophy, emphasizing that “Art knows no borders, and artistic wealth should belong to everyone,” celebrating the universal language of abstract art.

Beyond the visual spectacle, the public is invited to deepen their understanding of this unique art form at a special panel discussion. Scheduled for Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the event will feature both Shanghai and Hawaii artists, fostering a rich dialogue. Xu Demin, president of Shanghai Abstract Painting Society, highlighted how “The dialogue and mutual collaboration of ideas can enable artists from different cultural backgrounds to share, reach new understandings and develop their own unique styles,” inviting both artists and the community to engage with diverse worldviews.

This exhibition also marks the first half of a two-part international art exchange. The second phase is slated for December, when a selection of artwork from the Hawaii exhibit will travel to China for display at the Putuo Art Museum in Shanghai, solidifying the lasting bond forged through this artistic collaboration.

The Hawaii Island Art Alliance has diligently worked on fundraising initiatives to assist in offsetting travel costs for Hawaii artists selected for the upcoming exchange to Shanghai. Community members interested in supporting this significant cultural endeavor, learning more about donating, volunteering, or the exchange program itself, are encouraged to visit www.hiaa-online.org/shangai-exchange for more details.

Located conveniently in Hilo, the Wailoa Center, operating under the Division of State Parks, provides an accessible venue for this important cultural event. Admission to the exhibition is free and open to the public during its run. The center welcomes visitors Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., though it remains closed on state holidays, ensuring ample opportunity for everyone to experience this exceptional art exhibition.
