Ipswich.co.uk Launches Seed Funding Round for Dynamic Local News Expansion

Ipswich.co.uk, an independent digital news platform committed to “positive and purposeful” journalism for the Ipswich community, has officially commenced its seed funding round, signaling a significant milestone after a remarkable first year of operation.

Founded just one year ago by Oliver Rouane-Williams, a former digital product director at Archant, the platform has rapidly established itself as a vital local media voice. Its innovative approach has already garnered industry recognition, including a shortlisting for the prestigious best regional/local website of the year award.

The burgeoning news site has demonstrated impressive growth metrics since its inception, boasting over 528,000 website visits in its inaugural year. Furthermore, Ipswich.co.uk has published an extensive 1,928 articles, averaging 37 per week, and successfully attracted approximately 4,000 newsletter subscribers, with a commendable 90% engagement rate, ensuring readers actively consume at least one issue per month.

To fuel its ambitious next stage of development, the publisher is actively seeking to raise up to £225,000. This crucial investment represents the remaining allowance available under the Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme (SEIS), a government initiative designed to encourage investment in small, early-stage companies.

Breaking from traditional media models, Ipswich.co.uk operates without conventional website advertising or a paywall, a deliberate choice aimed at respecting its readers’ time and privacy. Instead, the platform has forged partnerships with 21 local businesses, offering unique “ad shares” and co-produced content opportunities, demonstrating an innovative approach to sustainable local journalism.

The new capital is earmarked for strategic expansion, including growing the editorial team. Rouane-Williams specifically aims to hire an economic growth reporter, initially part-time with the potential for a full-time role, alongside continuing the work of community impact and civic pride reporters. Additionally, funds may support high street regeneration projects, reinforcing the site’s commitment to Ipswich’s regional development.

Reflecting on the journey, Rouane-Williams shared his initial leap of faith, stating, “Twelve months ago, I sold my car to buy a domain name.” He emphasizes the phenomenal achievement of reaching half a million visits in a fiercely competitive market, traditionally dominated by three long-standing titles.

The local media landscape in Ipswich includes established players such as Newsquest’s Ipswich Star and East Anglian Daily Times, and Iliffe Media’s Suffolk News. Despite operating with significantly fewer resources, Ipswich.co.uk has carved out a distinct and impactful niche.

Looking ahead, the focus is squarely on the future, with the seed round poised to accelerate growth and realize the overarching vision of transforming Ipswich into a town where residents are proud to live, visitors are envious, and businesses and entrepreneurs thrive, showcasing the true power of community news.
